Calderone, Tielsch Named Players of Week By PSAC
January 31, 2006

EDINBORO, PA – A pair of Edinboro University basketball players received honors from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for their performance last week. Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) has been named the PSAC West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) was recognized as the Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week. Tielsch shares the honor with Shippensburg’s Chuck Davis.

Calderone, a 5’8” guard, helped the Fighting Scots make it eight wins in their last nine games with wins over Indiana(Pa.), 66-64, and Lock Haven, 69-59. In the Lock Haven contest, the junior scored a season-high 24 points, making 15 of 16 free throws in the process. The free throws made fell one shy of the school record of 16 held by Jessica Rowe. She was 4 of 8 from the floor and made 1 of 2 three-pointers. The road win boosted Edinboro’s record to 15-4 and 3-1 in the PSAC West. Calderone’s performance was even more impressive since she was forced to play point guard for a good portion of the game due to Callie Iorfido’s foul problems.

Calderone finished with 13 points against IUP, and for the week she averaged 18.5 ppg. and made 19 of 20 free throws. She is currently the Fighting Scots’ leading scorer at 13.8 ppg., and is also the team’s top three-point threat with 37 in 104 attempts. She has made 62 of 74 free throws, good for 83.8 percent. That figure ranks 34th in Division II.

Tielsch led the men’s basketball team, 13-6 overall, 4-0 in the PSAC West and riding a seven-game winning streak, to a pair of wins while posting back-to-back double-doubles, his 12th of the season. The 6’8” senior had 10 points, 10 rebounds and handed out six assists in a 69-62 win over Indiana(Pa.), but it was his performance at Lock Haven that caught the league’s attention. He made 15 of 26 field goals, including his lone three-point attempt, was 6 of 10 from the line, and finished with a career-high 37 points. That represented the most points by a Fighting Scot since Blake Johnson dropped in 41 points against Shippensburg in 2000-01. In addition, he pulled down 10 rebounds.

Tielsch averaged 23.5 ppg. and 10.0 rpg. in the two contests. That boosted his season averages to 17.2 ppg. and 9.7 rpg., both tops on the team. He ranks 11th in Division II in rebounding.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, February 1, hosting Clarion. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7:30 p.m.
