EDINBORO, PA It has been rare in recent
years that one would talk of the Edinboro University womens
basketball team and domination of the glass in the same sentence.
But on Wednesday night, the Fighting Scots put its height to good
use and controlled the glass to hand visiting Clarion a 76-60
defeat.
The victory is the ninth in the last ten games
for the Scots, boosting them to 16-4 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC
West. Edinboro is ranked eighth in the East Region. Clarion falls
to 10-10 and 1-4 in league play.
A huge 62-37 advantage on the glass, plus an
outstanding shooting night by Kelly Calderone (Freedom,
PA/Ambridge) helped Edinboro overcome a 33.3 percent shooting
performance from the floor. Calderone made 7 of 11 three-pointers
to finish the night with 21 points, her second straight 20-point
effort. Her backcourt partner and former high school teammate,
Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/ Ambridge) flirted with a
triple-double before finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 7
assists. She didnt commit a turnover.
Maria DiVecchio (Erie, PA/Villa Maria)
and Agnes Michalow (Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) paced the
inside effort. DiVecchio had 15 points and 6 rebounds, while
Michalow registered her sixth double-double of the season with 13
points and 13 boards. Kim Mardis (Cleveland, OH/East Tech),
a 64 redshirt freshman, added a career-high 8
rebounds.
The Edinboro defense turned in another strong
outing while limiting its 13th opponent in the last 14 games to
less than 70 points. Clarion shot just 32.8 percent from the floor
for the game.
Clarion led just once in the contest at 8-7. A
Michalow jumper gave Edinboro the lead for good, and the Fighting
Scots would take their biggest lead of the half at intermission,
43-26. Calderone made 5 of 7 threes in the half for 15
points. The lead would balloon to as much as 27 points in the
second half.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday,
February 4 at Shippensburg. |
