Fighting Scots Squander 13-Point Second Half Lead in Women's Loss at Shippensburg
Edinboro Loses for 15th Time in 16 Games at Heiges Field House
February 4, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Heiges Field House has never been an easy place to play for the Edinboro University women’s basketball team. On Saturday the Fighting Scots suffered another loss at Shippensburg, this one particularly disheartening since they held a 13-point second half lead. Shippensburg used a 10-0 run midway through the period and held Edinboro to just three baskets over the final twelve minutes for a 62-57 win. The loss was the 15th in the last 16 games at Heiges Field House.

Edinboro saw its three-game winning streak snapped, with the Fighting Scots falling to 16-5 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots came into the contest ranked eighth in the East Region. Shippensburg ended a four-game losing streak while improving to 11-10 overall and 1-5 in the West.

The Fighting Scots took an early lead and led by as many as seven points before Shippensburg scored the final six points of the first half to close to within 30-29. Edinboro boosted the lead to 13 on two occasions in the second half, the last at 50-37 with 12:11 to play on Maria DiVecchio’s (Erie, PA/ Villa Maria) jumper.

That’s when the Red Raiders proceeded to run off 10 straight points and pull to within 50-47 with 8:49 remaining. An Agnes Michalow (Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) jumper ended the burst, but the Scots would make just two more baskets the rest of the way. After taking the 13-point lead, Edinboro would make just 3 of 18 shots the rest of the way.

Shippensburg took the lead for good with one minute to play on a layup by Caitlin MacPherson. Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) made one of two free throws with 46 seconds to play to cut the lead to one, but Shippensburg would answer with a free throw by Megan Fogle with 41 seconds to play, and two more by Samantha Ramus at the 14 second mark for a 61-57 lead. Iorfido missed a three-pointer and Shanna Oaddams made one of two free throws for the final score with six seconds remaining.

Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) led three Scots in double figures with 14 points. Michalow added 13 points, while Iorfido had her fifth double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. The 5’5” senior now has 613 career assists, moving into fifth place all-time in the PSAC.

Ramus paced the Red Raiders with 17 points. After averaging 20.5 points and 14.0 rebounds against the Scots in two games a year ago, Oaddams, a 6’0” junior, finished with 17 points and 14 boards.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, February 8, hosting Slippery Rock. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
