February 8, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – After a slow start the Edinboro University men’s basketball team took control of its game with Slippery Rock on Wednesday night and proceeded to post an 82-71 victory. The Fighting Scots have now won nine of their last ten games to improve to 15-7 overall and 6-1 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock is now 1-22 and 0-8 in the PSAC West.

It was hard to tell that Slippery Rock entered the game riding a school-record 20-game losing streak. The Rock shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half and led by as many as 11 points before the Scots went on an 11-2 run late to close to within 39-35 at the half.

Edinboro scored the first seven points of the second half to grab a 42-39 lead. Slippery Rock would regain a one-point margin on two occasions early in the half, but the Scots took the lead for good at 50-49 on a Justin Moore (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) jumper with 15:34 to play. Edinboro would maintain the lead the rest of the way, but could never pull away from a stubborn Slippery Rock team.

Turnovers proved a major factor in the game, and contributed greatly to Edinboro’s slow start. The Fighting Scots committed nine turnovers in the first nine minutes, but only turned the ball over seven times the rest of the game. Edinboro forced Slippery Rock into 22 turnovers, good for 29 points.

Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central) epitomized the Scots’ evening. After not scoring until just under six minutes remained in the first half, the 5’10” senior ended the night with a season-high 26 points, making 11 of 19 field goals, including 3 of 6 three-pointers. Mitchell scored 12 points over the final six minutes of the half, then added 14 points in the second half.

Four Scots in all scored in double figures. Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) had 18 points, with Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) continuing his strong play with 17 points and eight rebounds. Moore made 6 of 8 field goals to finish with 15 points, adding eight boards, as well.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, February 11 at California(Pa.). Tipoff at Hamer Hall is set 7:00 p.m.
