Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to claim the lead against Slippery Rock on Wednesday night, and the Fighting Scots came away with a 56-48 win. The victory gives Edinboro a 17-5 record overall, and 5-2 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock falls to 11-12 and 3-5, respectively. Edinboro has now won 10 of its last 12 games. The Fighting Scots are ranked ninth in the East Region.

Slippery Rock jumped out to a quick 13-6 lead with just over eight minutes gone in the game, but the Scots held The Rock scoreless for the next four minutes while scoring 13 straight points to take a 19-13 lead. Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) scored five points and Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) added four during the run.

Edinboro ended the first half with a 31-23 lead, and was able to hold off The Rock despite shooting just 26.9 percent from the floor. Slippery Rock wasn’t much better, ending the night at 31.4 percent, including 30.8 percent over the final twenty minutes. The Rock pulled to within four points on two occasions early in the second half, but never got closer than that the rest of the way.

The defensive struggle was no coincidence, as Slippery Rock entered the game ranked second in the PSAC in scoring defense and Edinboro was fourth. The Fighting Scots have now held 15 of their last 16 opponents to under 70 points.

After a slow start, Maria DiVecchio (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) ended the night with her second straight double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds. She was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line. The senior forward moved into 15th place in career scoring with 1,114 points. Calderone was the only other player in double digits, finishing with 17 points.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, February 11 at California(Pa.). Tipoff at Hamer Hall is set 5:00 p.m.
