EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team suffered its fifth loss in its last six games at
Hamer Hall on Saturday night, as California(Pa.) handed the
Fighting Scots a 78-63 defeat. The loss leaves Edinboro at 15-8
overall and 6-2 in PSAC West action, while the Vulcans improve to
16-7 and 6-3 in league play.
A 17-2 run midway through the first half did in
the Fighting Scots. Holding an 18-14 lead with ten minutes left in
the half, Edinboro missed nine straight shots as Cal pulled ahead
31-20 with 4:37 left in the half. Edinboros lone points
during the stretch was a pair of free throws by Torry Mitchell
(Erie, PA/Central). In all, the Vulcans would outscore
Edinboro, 30-6, over the final ten minutes to take a 44-24 lead at
intermission.
Any comeback hopes the Scots harbored were
quickly doused as the Vulcans came out and scored the first eight
points of the second half to take a 52-24 lead. Edinboros
largest deficit came at 30 points, 71-41, with 7:27 to play. The
Scots would score the final ten points of the contest.
California(Pa.) entered the game ranked first
in the PSAC and seventh nationally in field goal percentage, and
the Vulcans shot 52.4 percent after being held to 40.7 percent in
the first meeting between the two schools. Edinboro came away with
a last-second 66-64 win in that contest. The Vulcans also
outrebounded Edinboro, 47-34, after entering the contest ranked
13th in Division II in rebound margin.
Mitchell and Justin Moore (Canonsburg,
PA/Canon-McMillan) led the Scots with 19 points each, with
Moore going 9 of 12 from the floor and pulling down a team-high
eight rebounds. Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney)
added 11 points. Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour),
Edinboros leading scorer and rebounder at 17.3 ppg. and 9.5
rpg., played just 18 minutes and was held to eight points and
three rebounds.
Cal featured four players in double figures,
led by Boris Mesnager and Travis Eisentrout with 14 points each.
James Petty had 13 markers and Osborne Gardner 12.
The loss, coupled with Shippensburgs
83-80 double overtime win over Indiana(Pa.), leaves Edinboro two
games behind the Red Raiders for first place in the Western
division. Edinboro will play at IUP on Wednesday, February 15.
