EDINBORO, PA Chris Ravello (Odenton,
MD/Archbishop Spalding) entered Wednesdays game at
Indiana(Pa.) having made just 3 of his last 20 shots and scoring
just 12 points over the last three games. But the senior guard
also seems to rise to the occasion against IUP, and that was again
the case. He buried a jumper with eight seconds remaining to give
Edinboro a key PSAC West 80-79 road win at Memorial Field House.
The victory leaves both Edinboro and IUP with
identical 16-8 records, but the Fighting Scots sweep the regular
season series with the Indians for the second straight year and
improve to 7-2 in league play. IUP falls to 5-5 in the PSAC West.
Edinboro has now won five of the last six meetings with the
Indians. The victory earned Edinboro a spot in the upcoming PSAC
Playoffs, as the Fighting Scots join Shippensburg as the first two
teams to qualify.
Head coach Greg Walcavich stuck almost
exclusively with his starting five, as all five starters scored in
double figures. Facing the prospect of getting into a running game
with the top scoring team in the conference, Walcavich choose to
slow the game down and control the tempo. IUP came in averaging
89.0 ppg., including 99.2 ppg. over the previous six games.
The Fighting Scots trailed by as many as 11
points in the first half, that deficit coming at 7:34 at 24-13.
Edinboro proceeded to run off eight straight points, beginning
with a Ravello three-pointer, a dunk by Daren Tielsch (McKees
Rocks, PA/Montour), and another three by Curtis Ingram
(Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney). The Scots finally caught up
at 29-29 on a Tielsch jumper with 3:35 to play in the half, and
scored the last five points for a 34-31 lead at intermission.
Edinboro led for much of the second half,
building the lead to nine points at 76-67 with 3:19 to play. Thats
when IUP rallied to outscore the Scots 12-2 to take a 79-78 lead
with 26 seconds left. Lawrence Baker, who scored a game-high 32
points, made six straight free throws in a period of a minute to
put the Indians on top.
That led to Ravellos winning jumper with
eight seconds to play. IUP tried to get off a shot on the final
seconds, but the ball was knocked away with no one gaining control
before the final buzzer.
Tielsch led the Fighting Scots with 21 points
and eight rebounds, his tenth game with 20-or-more points this
season. Ingram added 16 points and eight boards. Tielsch made 9 of
11 field goals, while Ingram was 6 of 9. After matching his
career-high with 22 points in the first meeting with IUP, Ravello
contributed 15 points and a career-high six assists. Torry
Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central) dropped in 15 points and had eight
assists. Justin Moore (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) had
11 points.
Edinboro shot 52.6 percent from the floor while
holding IUP, which came in second in the PSAC in field goal
percentage, to 37.8 percent. IUP held a 44-31 lead on the boards.
While Baker, the second-leading scorer in the PSAC at 21.2 ppg.
entering the game, had a big game, the Scots once again held Eddie
Peterson in check. IUPs fourth all-time leading scorer and
the top scorer in the league at 22.5 ppg., the senior was held to
12 points, making 5 of 19 shots. He scored seven points in the
first meeting.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday,
February 18, hosting Lock Haven. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is
set for 3 p.m. |
