Official Press Release

Calderone’s 32 Points Not Enough As Scots Fall at IUP, 68-55
February 15, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team has now lost three of its last four games after suffering a 68-55 loss at Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots entered the game ranked eighth in the East Region, and fall to 17-7 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC West. IUP, the ninth-ranked team in the East Region, moves ahead of Edinboro into second place in the PSAC West with a 6-4 ledger, and the Indians are 17-8 overall.

Not only did the Fighting Scots lose the game but they also lost point guard Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) to injury. The senior went down with four minutes left in the first half and did not return. Iorfido owns the Edinboro career record for assists with 627, and ranks fifth all-time in the PSAC.

The offensive line fell on Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge), and while the junior guard was up to the challenge, she received little support. Calderone had her second straight 30-point game with a career-high 32 points, making 8 of 19 field goals and 15 of 16 free throws. She also made 15 of 16 free throws at Lock Haven, falling one free throw made shy of the school record.

However, not one other Fighting Scot scored more than six points, as combined the rest of the team went 7 of 34 from the floor. Edinboro shot a dismal 28.3 percent from the floor for the game, including 23.1 percent in the second half, missing all ten of its three-point attempts. Agnes Michalow (Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) and Maria DiVecchio (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) came in averaging just over 24 points between them, but finished with eight points and went 2-for-11 from the floor.

Edinboro held a 33-28 lead at the half, as the two teams combined for four ties and three lead changes. The Scots led by as many as seven points in the half at 33-26 with 1:38 to play on a pair of free throws by Jessi Montie (Erie, PA/McDowell).

IUP took control of the game early in the second half. Edinboro scored the first basket of the second half, but the Indians went on a 9-0 run to take a 37-35 lead. That was part of a 22-3 run over the first nine minutes of the second half, as IUP went up 50-38. Edinboro never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The Indians ended the game shooting 40.0 percent from the floor and outrebounding the Fighting Scots, 45-36. With Iorfido out of the game, Edinboro ended up turning the ball over 20 times.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, February 18, hosting Lock Haven. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 1:00 p.m.
