EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team made it 25 wins in the last 26 meetings with Lock
Haven, and sent the Bald Eagles down to their eight straight
defeat, but it was anything but easy. The Fighting Scots outscored
the youthful Bald Eagles, 17-7, in overtime to come away with an
81-71 victory. Edinboro is now 17-8 overall and 8-2 in the PSAC
West, while Lock Haven falls to 3-22 and 1-10, respectively.
Edinboro has now 18 straight games against Lock Haven at McComb
Fieldhouse.
A 9-0 spurt in the extra session did in the
Bald Eagles. Edinboro never trailed in overtime, taking the lead
for good on its first possession thanks to a Torry Mitchell
(Erie, PA/Central) three-pointer. But Billy Arres layup
cut the lead to 72-69 with 2:11 to play. Daren Tielsch (McKees
Rocks, PA/Montour) made four three throws to boost the lead to
76-69, then Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney)
made one of two freebies with 53 seconds left. Following a
Lock Haven miss, Justin Moore (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan)
put the Scots up 79-69 with 33 ticks left on a breakaway dunk, and
then Ingram canned two more free throws for an 81-69 lead.
Lock Haven took control of the game in the
first half with a 16-4 run to go up by 11 at 32-21 with just over
four minutes to play. The Fighting Scots cut the lead to 36-31 at
intermission despite shooting just 34.4 percent in the first half.
Edinboro used a 19-7 run in the second half to finally regain the
lead and go up by seven at 52-45 with 12:11 remaining, the Scots
biggest lead until overtime. But the young Lock Haven squad, with
three freshmen in the lineup, refused to fold and regained the
lead with just under eight minutes left.
The Bald Eagles took their last lead with 38
seconds left as Toby Gamble made one of two free throws for a
64-63 advantage. When Moore made the first of two free throws,
then missed the second, the game was tied at 64-all with 30
seconds left. Lock Haven would use two timeouts, the last with 5.4
seconds left, and had two chances to win in the final seconds, but
missed both shots.
Ingram and Tielsch combined for 50 points and
26 rebounds, with both posting double-doubles. Ingram, a 63
junior in his first season as a Fighting Scot, scored a
career-high 27 points on 11 of 19 from the field, including a
three-pointer, and 4 of 6 free throws. He added 11 rebounds and
five assists. Tielsch recorded his 13th double-double of the
season with 23 points and 15 rebounds, adding four blocked shots.
After going scoreless in the first half,
Mitchell ended with 11 points, making 3 of 7 three-pointers. With
Chris Ravello (Odenton, MD/Archbishop Spalding) out with
an injury, Dan Grabill (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) made
his first start of the season and made 3 of 5 three-pointers to
finish with nine points, all in the first half.
The Fighting Scots ended the day shooting 41.8
percent from the floor. After a hot start, Lock Haven cooled to
39.4 percent, including 33.3 percent in the second half and
overtime session. Edinboro won the war of the boards, 46-39.
Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday,
