Official Press Release

Fighting Scots Fall in Overtime to Lock Haven Women, 75-72
Edinboro Fails to Secure PSAC Playoff Berth
February 18, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – An Edinboro win and a Slippery Rock or Clarion loss on Saturday could have assured the Fighting Scots women’s basketball team of a spot in the PSAC Playoffs. But a Lock Haven team clinging to its playoff life wasn’t about to accommodate Edinboro, handing the Fighting Scots a 75-72 defeat in overtime at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro is now 17-8 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC West, while Lock Haven is 16-8 and 5-6, respectively. The Fighting Scots came in ranked eighth in the East Region.

As it would happen, Slippery Rock did lose to Shippensburg, but Edinboro will have to wait until Wednesday when it plays at Clarion to possibly reserve a spot in the postseason.

Trailing 28-19, Edinboro went on a 19-2 run to end the first half and take what appeared to be a comfortable 38-30 lead at the half. Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) keyed the burst with eight points, but after scoring 30 and 32 points in her last two games, she was limited to 17 points.

Edinboro held Lock Haven to just 34.4 shooting from the floor in the first twenty minutes, and committed just five turnovers. But the Lady Eagles shot 46.4 percent in the second half and made 3 of 5 shots in overtime. The Fighting Scots built the margin to 11 points at 48-37 with 14:54 remaining on a Calderone jumper, but the Lady Eagles kept clawing back, taking the lead at 64-63 with 35 seconds left on Caniece Montague’s three-point play. After an Edinboro turnover, Kristy Shadduck made one of two free throws to give Lock Haven a 65-63 lead with 19 seconds left. That also concluded a run of seven straight points.

Calderone would snap Edinboro’s scoreless streak with a layup with seven seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 65-65.

The Lady Eagles took immediate control in overtime, running off the first seven points for a 72-65 lead with 1:25 to play. The Fighting Scots would close to 74-72 on Callie Iorfido’s (Ambridge, PA/ Ambridge) layup with 11 seconds to play. Elizabeth Gabrielle was fouled with eight seconds left and made one of two free throws for a three-point lead, and Edinboro missed a layup at the buzzer.

Maria DiVecchio (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) paced four Scots in double digits with 20 points. Jessi Montie (Erie, PA/McDowell) added 14 points while Iorfido had 11 markers.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, February 22 at Clarion, still in search of a PSAC Playoff berth.
