February 22, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Edinboro University men’s basketball rode Daren Tielsch’s (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) 14th double-double of the season for a 69-66 win at Clarion on Wednesday night. The win clinches second place in the PSAC West for the Fighting Scots, the sixth straight year Edinboro has finished either first or second in division, along with a home playoff game on Tuesday, February 28 in the PSAC Quarterfinals.

The Fighting Scots, now 18-8 overall and 9-2 in the West, will host California(Pa.) in the first round of the playoffs. The Vulcans, 7-4 in the West, handed Shippensburg its first league loss of the season on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots conclude the regular season hosting Shippensburg on Saturday. A victory would give Edinboro a tie for first place in the West, although the Red Raiders have already clinched the number one seed.

Edinboro registered its first sweep of Clarion since 2000-01, but it certainly wasn’t easy. The back-and-forth contest featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties. The first half alone had seven lead changes, with Tielsch’s layup at the buzzer giving Edinboro a 29-28 lead at the half.

The 6’8” senior turned in a big second half with 15 points and eight rebounds, giving him 25 points and 12 boards on the night. He has now scored 20-or-more points in 12 games, including the last three. Tielsch made 10 of 14 field goals and 5 of 10 free throws.

Tielsch’s dunk broke the final tie in the game, giving Edinboro a 60-58 lead with 3:21 remaining. The Fighting Scots maintained the lead the rest of the way, although the margin was no bigger than four points over the final three minutes. Terrance Vaughns closed the Golden Eagles to within 68-66 with 17 seconds left, making a pair of free throws, but Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) made one of two free throws with 2.5 seconds left for the final margin.

Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central) added 16 points for the Fighting Scots, while Justin Moore (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) made all five of his field goa attempts and both free throws to finish with 12 points. Ingram had 10 markers.
