EDINBORO, PA Edinboro University mens
basketball rode Daren Tielschs (McKees Rocks,
PA/Montour) 14th double-double of the season for a 69-66 win
at Clarion on Wednesday night. The win clinches second place in
the PSAC West for the Fighting Scots, the sixth straight year
Edinboro has finished either first or second in division, along
with a home playoff game on Tuesday, February 28 in the PSAC
Quarterfinals.
The Fighting Scots, now 18-8 overall and 9-2 in
the West, will host California(Pa.) in the first round of the
playoffs. The Vulcans, 7-4 in the West, handed Shippensburg its
first league loss of the season on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots
conclude the regular season hosting Shippensburg on Saturday. A
victory would give Edinboro a tie for first place in the West,
although the Red Raiders have already clinched the number one
seed.
Edinboro registered its first sweep of Clarion
since 2000-01, but it certainly wasnt easy. The
back-and-forth contest featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties. The
first half alone had seven lead changes, with Tielschs layup
at the buzzer giving Edinboro a 29-28 lead at the half.
The 68 senior turned in a big
second half with 15 points and eight rebounds, giving him 25
points and 12 boards on the night. He has now scored 20-or-more
points in 12 games, including the last three. Tielsch made 10 of
14 field goals and 5 of 10 free throws.
Tielschs dunk broke the final tie in the
game, giving Edinboro a 60-58 lead with 3:21 remaining. The
Fighting Scots maintained the lead the rest of the way, although
the margin was no bigger than four points over the final three
minutes. Terrance Vaughns closed the Golden Eagles to within 68-66
with 17 seconds left, making a pair of free throws, but Curtis
Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) made one of two free
throws with 2.5 seconds left for the final margin.
Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central) added
16 points for the Fighting Scots, while Justin Moore
(Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) made all five of his field goa
attempts and both free throws to finish with 12 points. Ingram had
10 markers. |
