EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball clinched a berth in the PSAC West playoffs
for the fourth straight year with a 73-71 win at Clarion on
Wednesday night. The victory gives the Fighting Scots an 18-8
record, but more importantly they are now 6-5 in the PSAC West
with one game remaining. The loss drops Clarion to 12-14 and 3-8
in the PSAC West.
Edinboro swept the season series with the
Golden Eagles for the first time since 2000-01, and won at Tippin
Gymnasium for the first time since 2001-02.
The Fighting Scots conclude the regular season
on Saturday, hosting a Shippensburg. Edinboro must defeat the Red
Raiders and have Clarion win at Indiana(Pa.) to secure the second
seed and a home game in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday,
February 28. A loss or IUP win would send the Fighting Scots to
IUP that night.
In a game which featured 14 lead changes and
eight ties, Edinboro trailed by five points with 4:33 remaining,
68-63. The Scots went on a 10-1 run, breaking a 69-69 tie on Callie
Iorfidos (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) layup with 1:05
remaining, giving the Scots a 71-69 lead. Agnes Michalow
(Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) made one of two free throws with
32 seconds remaining, and Maria DiVecchio (Erie, PA/Villa
Maria) did the same with nine seconds left for a 73-69 lead.
Melba Meltons layup with three seconds left accounted for
the final score.
Edinboro scored the first six points of the
game, but Clarion would go up by 20-16 at the midway point of the
first half. Edinboro answered with a 15-3 run, giving the Scots a
31-23 lead, their largest of the game, with 5:28 left. Clarion
would come back and score the next seven points in a row before
Edinboro claimed a 37-32 lead at intermission.
Jessi Montie (Erie, PA/McDowell)
enjoyed the best night of her career. The senior guard finished
with 21 points and 12 rebounds, her first career double-double.
Amazingly, 11 of her rebounds came on the offensive glass.
DiVecchio added 17 points and eight rebounds,
while Iorfido had her ninth double-double of the season with 12
points and 11 assists. She committed just one turnover as the
Scots turned the ball over just eight times. Iorfido now has 210
assists this season, the third-highest single season total.
Michalow was also in double figures, coming off the bench to score
10 points.
The worst rebounding team in the PSAC, Edinboro
outrebounded Clarion for the second straight game, 42-34. In
winning the rebounding war and forcing 14 turnovers, Edinboro was
able to overcome Clarion shooting 52.0 percent from the floor.
