EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro Universitys
mens basketball team saw its hopes of finishing in a tie for
first place in the PSAC West come to an end on Saturday afternoon
as Shippensburg handed the Fighting Scots a 71-66 defeat. A win
would have given Edinboro a tie with the Red Raiders for first
place. Instead, Edinboro finishes in second place with a 9-3
record in league play, and is 18-9 overall. Shippensburg, ranked
fourth in the East Region and 19th in the NABC Division II poll,
finishes first at 11-1 and 22-5 overall.
The Fighting Scots appeared well on their way
to the upset after grabbing a ten-point lead at 44-34 with 15:37
left to play. Following a Ship miss, Curtis Ingrams
(Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) three-pointer just rimmed
out, and instead of going up by 13 points, the Scots saw Ship
score the next six points to get back into the game.
The other key moment in the game came with 9:37
left to play when Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour)
picked up his fourth personal foul and had to go to the bench.
The 68 senior had his 13 game with 20-or-more points
as he finished with a game-high 29 markers. But with Tielsch
sitting on the bench, the Red Raiders reclaimed the lead with
seven straight points to go up 60-55 with 4:51 to play.
Edinboro would pull even at 62-62 on Ingrams
layup with 2:27 left, but a pair of free throws by Todd Johnson
gave Ship the lead for good. Johnson would finish with a
career-high 23 points, also pacing the Red Raiders with eight
rebounds. Jamal Williams boosted the lead to 66-62 with a layup
with 1:45 left. A Tielsch layup brought the Scots within two once
again, and Edinboro had a chance to tie following a Ship miss, but
Justin Moores (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan)
16-foot jumper was off the mark, and Johnson answered with a
15-foot jumper for a 68-64 lead with 22 seconds left. Edinboro
would misfire on its next possession and the Red Raiders made
three of four free throws to hold off the Scots.
Edinboro shot 50.0 percent from the floor
against a Shippensburg team which came into the game ranked first
in the PSAC and fourth nationally in field goal percentage (37.3
pct.). However, the Fighting Scots were just 15 of 24 from the
line while Ship was 20 of 26. In addition, the Red Raiders held a
38-32 rebounding edge, with 13 offensive rebounds, and forced 14
Edinboro turnovers while committing just seven. Shippensburg ended
the day at 38.1 percent from the floor.
Tielsch made 11 of 16 field goals and 7 of 10
free throws, and also led the Scots with seven rebounds. Ingram
was the only other Fighting Scot in double digits, ending with 13
points.
Edinboro, the number two seed, will host
California(Pa.), the number three seed, in Tuesdays PSAC
Quarterfinals. Shippensburg, meanwhile, hosts Indiana(Pa.).
