EDINBORO, PA Callie Iorfido
(Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) wasnt about to lose in her final
regular season home appearance at McComb Fieldhouse. With Iorfido
virtually willing the Fighting Scots to victory, Edinboro posted
an 89-83 overtime win over Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon. The
victory gives Edinboro, ranked ninth in the East Region, a 19-8
record and 7-5 in the PSAC West heading into the PSAC playoffs.
Shippensburg ends the season with a 12-15 record, and 2-10 in the
PSAC West.
Iorfido was one of three seniors honored before
the game. The 55 guard proceeded to record her second
triple-double of the season and third in Edinboro history,
finishing with career-highs of 29 points and 14 rebounds, along
with 10 assists. Iorfido scored Edinboros final nine points
in regulation as the Fighting Scots rallied from a 72-64 deficit
with 3:53 to play in regulation. She would add four points in
overtime.
After trailing for much of the first half,
Edinboro closed to within 36-34 at halftime. The Lady Raiders
opened the second half with seven straight points and eventually
built the lead to 12 points. Shippensburg would lead throughout
the half until the Scots tied the score at 77-77 on Iorfidos
drive with 1:12 to play.
Following a Ship miss, Iorfido made a pair of
free throws with 46 seconds left for a 79-77 Boro lead, the first
since early in the first half. Shippensburgs Megan Fogle
sent the game into overtime tied at 79-all with a layup with 31
seconds left. Iorfido had a chance to win it in regulation, but
her short jumper missed the mark just before the buzzer.
Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge)
was fouled gathering in the overtime tap with just one second
gone, and her two free throws gave Edinboro the lead for good at
81-79. The lead would go to as much as seven points at 87-80 on
Maria DiVecchios (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) layup, with
Iorfido collecting her tenth assist to secure the triple double.
Calderone added 18 points, making 9 of 11 free
throws. The junior guard now has 998 career points, including her
freshman total from the University at Buffalo. Agnes Michalow
(Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) scored 14 points and Rae
Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) came off the
bench to contribute 11 points. The Fighting Scots made 28 of 33
free throws, with Iorfido going 11 of 13 from the charity stripe.
Iorfido now has 653 career assists, taking over
sole possession of fourth place all-time in the PSAC. Her 220
assists this season is the third-highest season total. |
