February 25, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) wasn’t about to lose in her final regular season home appearance at McComb Fieldhouse. With Iorfido virtually willing the Fighting Scots to victory, Edinboro posted an 89-83 overtime win over Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon. The victory gives Edinboro, ranked ninth in the East Region, a 19-8 record and 7-5 in the PSAC West heading into the PSAC playoffs. Shippensburg ends the season with a 12-15 record, and 2-10 in the PSAC West.

Iorfido was one of three seniors honored before the game. The 5’5” guard proceeded to record her second triple-double of the season and third in Edinboro history, finishing with career-highs of 29 points and 14 rebounds, along with 10 assists. Iorfido scored Edinboro’s final nine points in regulation as the Fighting Scots rallied from a 72-64 deficit with 3:53 to play in regulation. She would add four points in overtime.

After trailing for much of the first half, Edinboro closed to within 36-34 at halftime. The Lady Raiders opened the second half with seven straight points and eventually built the lead to 12 points. Shippensburg would lead throughout the half until the Scots tied the score at 77-77 on Iorfido’s drive with 1:12 to play.

Following a Ship miss, Iorfido made a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left for a 79-77 Boro lead, the first since early in the first half. Shippensburg’s Megan Fogle sent the game into overtime tied at 79-all with a layup with 31 seconds left. Iorfido had a chance to win it in regulation, but her short jumper missed the mark just before the buzzer.

Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) was fouled gathering in the overtime tap with just one second gone, and her two free throws gave Edinboro the lead for good at 81-79. The lead would go to as much as seven points at 87-80 on Maria DiVecchio’s (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) layup, with Iorfido collecting her tenth assist to secure the triple double.

Calderone added 18 points, making 9 of 11 free throws. The junior guard now has 998 career points, including her freshman total from the University at Buffalo. Agnes Michalow (Krakow, Poland/Krakow #32) scored 14 points and Rae Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) came off the bench to contribute 11 points. The Fighting Scots made 28 of 33 free throws, with Iorfido going 11 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Iorfido now has 653 career assists, taking over sole possession of fourth place all-time in the PSAC. Her 220 assists this season is the third-highest season total.
