EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak in
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoff games on Tuesday,
traveling to Indiana, PA and picking up a 65-54 win over IUP. The
victory gives Edinboro a 20-8 record, while IUP falls to 19-9. The
Fighting Scots won their first PSAC Playoff game since 1997-98.
Edinboro, the number seed out of the Western
Division, advances to the PSAC semifinals, where the Fighting
Scots will play Kutztown on Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. The Golden
Bears, the fourth seed in the East, upset top-seeded East
Stroudsburg, 55-50. California(Pa.) will host the PSAC Final Four,
with the Vulcans squaring off against Millersville in the other
semifinal game at 8 p.m. Cal, the number one seed in the West,
defeated Slippery Rock, 52-39. Millersville, the number two seed
in the East, was an 80-68 winner over Mansfield (No. 3).
The Fighting Scots snapped a 5-5 tie on Kelly
Calderones (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) three-pointer with
12:26 to play. They would never trail after that, and used a 12-2
run late in the first half to jump out to a 27-15 advantage with
2:01 remaining. Rae Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge
Springs) started the run with a layup and three-pointer, and
Calderone ended it with three jumpers and a pair of free throws.
Edinboro led 32-16 at the half, as IUP shot just 21.9 percent in
the first twenty minutes.
Edinboro would maintain a double-digit lead
throughout much of the second half, but IUP began chipping away at
the lead and pulled to within 58-54 with 2:28 remaining. Staci
Heberlings layup would be the final points for the Indians,
as Edinboro closed out the win by scoring the final seven points.
Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) made a pair of
free throws with 1:12 left, and following a pair of IUP misses she
canned two more freebies with 46 seconds left, boosting the lead
to 62-54. IUP would miss three more shots, and Maria DiVecchio
(Erie, PA/Villa Maria) made one of two free throws at the
26-second mark. DiVecchio made two more free throws for the final
score.
Edinboro was outscored 22-18 from the floor,
but the Fighting Scots made 25 of 32 free throws while IUP was 10
of 15. That helped overcome a 56-39 rebounding deficit. IUP also
shot just 28.2 percent from the floor.
Calderone paced Edinboro with 23 points, making
11 of 12 free throws. She scored 17 of her points in the first
half, and went over 1,000 points for her career with 1,021 points.
That includes one season at the University at Buffalo for the
junior.
DiVecchio added her third double-double of the
season with 15 points and 13 rebounds, matching her career high in
the latter category. The senior forward moved into 14th place in
career scoring with 1,183 points. Iorfido added 11 points and
seven assists. She now has 227 assists this season, surpassing her
own total of 225 a year ago, and now needs ten assists for the
single-season record. Her 660 career assists moves her into a tie
for third place all-time in the PSAC.
