EDINBORO, PA A pair of Edinboro
University basketball players received honors from the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for their performance last
week. Callie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) has been
named the PSAC West Womens Basketball Player of the Week,
while Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) was
recognized as the Mens Basketball Co-Player of the Week.
Tielsch shares the honor with Indiana(Pa.)s Eddie Peterson.
It marks the fifth time Iorfido has been recognized by the PSAC
and the third time for Tielsch.
Iorfido, a 55 guard, helped the
Fighting Scots (19-8, 7-5 PSAC West) clinch a PSAC playoff spot
with wins over Clarion and Shippensburg. She had a modest 12
points and 11 assists in a 73-71 win at Clarion for her eighth
double-double of the season.
She followed that up with her second
triple-double of the season and third in Edinboro history as
Edinboro rallied for an 89-83 overtime win against Shippensburg.
She literally put the team on her back and carried it down the
stretch, scoring the final nine points in regulation, then adding
four of the Fighting Scots ten points in overtime, along
with two assists. When it was all said and done, she had
career-highs of 29 points and 14 rebounds, along with 10 assists.
For the week. Iorfido averaged 20.5 ppg. and
9.5 rpg. with 21 assists and just three turnovers. Entering
Edinboros playoff game at IUP, she was averaging 12.9 ppg.
and 5.2 rpg. with 220 assists, the third-highest single season
total.
Tielsch averaged 27.5 ppg., 9.5 rpg. and 2.5
blocks as Edinboro split contests against Clarion and Shippensburg
to finish at 18-9 overall and 9-3 in the PSAC West. The 68
senior shot 70.0 percent from the floor, making 21 of 30 field
goals, and was 12 of 20 (60.0 pct.) from the line. He opened with
a 25-point, 12-rebound outing at Clarion, as Edinboro prevailed,
69-66. It was his 14th double-double. He made 10 of 14 field goals
and 5 of 10 free throws, adding a pair of blocks.
While Edinboro suffered a 71-66 defeat to
Shippensburg in its regular season finale, Tielsch pumped in 29
points, his fourth straight game with 20-or-more points and 13th
of the season, while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. He
made 11 of 16 field goals and 7 of 10 free throws, while blocking
three shots.
Tielsch leads the Fighting Scots both in
scoring (18.0 ppg.) and rebounding (9.4), also leading the PSAC in
the latter category. He is shooting 55.2 percent from the floor
and has blocked 41 shots.
The mens team has advanced to the PSAC
semifinals and will play Friday against West Chester. The women's
team is also in the league semifinals, and they too will play
Friday against Kutztown. |
