EDINBORO, PA -- The Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference today announced that seniors Daren Tielsch (McKees
Rocks, PA/Montour) and Torry Mitchell (Erie, PA/Central)
have been named to the All-PSAC West first team. The duo have
played a key role in leading the Fighting Scots to a 21-9 record
and a berth in the NCAA Division II East Regional.
Edinboro defeated Shippensburg, 52-51, last
weekend to capture its second straight PSAC Championship. The
Scots became the first team to win back-to-back titles since
Cheyney in 1982 and 83.
Tielsch, a 68senior who began his
career at Penn State, was named the PSAC Tournament Most Valuable
Player. He scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 62-59
semifinal win at West Chester.
Mitchell, meanwhile, keyed the Fighting Scots
97-78 romp over California(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. The 510
senior scored a career-high 35 points, making 8 of 14
three-pointers, and added six rebounds and six assists.
Tielsch leads the Fighting Scots both in
scoring (18.2 ppg.) and rebounding (9.5 rpg.), the latter figure
leading the PSAC and ranking 18th in Division II. He is shooting
54.5 percent from the floor (214 of 393) and has set a new school
record with 196 free throw attempts, making 112. He also leads the
team in steals (37), ranks second in assists (80), and has 42
blocks, second on the team.
He has reached double figures in 26 of 30
games, while leading the Scots in scoring 14 times and in
rebounding 21 times. In addition, he has scored 20-or-more points
15 times, including six of the last seven games, and owns 16
double-doubles.
Tielsch played one season at Penn State before
transferring to Robert Morris to be closer to his ill father.
After sitting out a season, he played one game in 2003-04 for the
Colonials before suffering a serious leg injury. With 546 points,
he ranks ninth in points scored in a season, and he has 284
rebounds, good for 12th all-time. Including his time at Penn State
and Robert Morris, he has scored 995 career points.
Mitchell also began his career at another
school before joining the Fighting Scots. He played two seasons at
Mercyhurst College before transferring a year ago.
The former Central High School standout is
averaging 13.9 ppg., second on the team, while leading the Scots
with 122 assists. He is also the teams top three-point
threat with 62 in 189 attempts.
Mitchell has scored in double digits in 19
games, leading the Scots in scoring six times. He has renowned as
one of the top one-on-one players in the PSAC.
With 556 points at Mercyhurst and 780 at
Edinboro, Mitchells career total stands at 1,336 points. He
ranks seventh in career three-pointers made (129) at Edinboro, and
is eighth in career three-pointers attempted (385).
