The Edinboro softball team improved to 5-0 this afternoon with an 8-3 victory over St. Michael’s. Mary Lynn Arlotta (N. Tonawanda, NY/ Mount St. Mary Academy) improved to 2-0 with the win. The sophomore hurled seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out nine. Arlotta pitched 26.1 total innings as a freshman and has already thrown 14 in two appearances this season. She now has 10 strikeouts, six less than she threw all of her freshman campaign.

The Fighting Scots’ offense struck early and often, building a comfortable eight run lead that would hold until the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the first, freshman Dana Webb (Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) tripled to right center with two outs and then scored on a single by Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester).

Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) led off the second with a double and would score on Cyndi Carnaghi’s (White Plains, NY/White Plains) single. Carnaghi stole second then hustled to third on a passed ball. Freshman Katelyn Gurgiolo (Stow, OH/Medina) reached on an error that allowed Carnaghi to score. Two more St. Michael’s errors plated Gurgiolo.

In the bottom of the third, Carnaghi would drive in the Fighting Scots fifth run of the game with a single to left scoring Danielle Arno (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius).

Edinboro would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Gurgiolo drew a walk to lead off and then stole second base easily. Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake) crushed a double to plate Gurgiolo and would move to third on Arno’s single. Iorfido then singled to score Lindamood for the Fighting Scots final run of the game.

St. Michael’s would score its first run in the top of the fifth and would add two runs in the top of the seventh via an Edinboro error and a two-run homer by St. Michael’s Meg Currier.

Winona State 8, Edinboro 3
After defeating St. Michael’s 8-3 in the game prior, the Fighting Scots fell by the same score in the second game of the day to Winona St., ranked 22nd in Division II by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Both teams went down in order to open the game but the Warriors jumped on sophomore Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) for two runs in the top of the second to take the early lead.

Edinboro would answer with one run in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) singled and stole second base. Leanne Carmichael (Pinehurst, MA/Billerica Memorial) drove a 1-2 offering into the outfield and to plate Iorfido and cut the Warriors lead to 2-1.

Edinboro retired the side in order in the top of the third and had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Hannah Kipfer (Meadville, PA/Meadville) singled with one out and moved to third on Dana Webb’s (Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) deep single to center with two outs. Webb tried to steal second but was gunned down by the Warriors catcher for the final out of the inning.

The Warriors added two runs again in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Winona St.’s Jenny Dobbertin roughed up the Fighting Scots again. The first baseman uncorked a double to left field, driving in her third and fourth RBI’s of the game. She would finish the game with 5 RBI’s.

Edinboro would score for the last time in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Danielle Arno (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) blasted a leadoff home run over the right center fence to score Edinboro’s third run of the game. Kipfer grounded out to the shortstop for the first out. Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake) drilled a single and would score on Webb’s triple to right center that fell just inches short of being a two-run home run.

Winona St. scored again scored two runs in the top of the sixth and plated two more runs in the top of the seventh for the final score. All but one of the Warriors runs were scored with two outs.

Rose went the distance for the Fighting Scots, throwing six innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits while striking out five. The sophomore is 1-1 overall.

Offensively, Webb went 1-3 with an RBI. The freshman is hitting .400 and three of her four extra base hits have been triples. Arno went 2-3 at the plate while Iorfido went 1-3 with a run scored. Carmichael went 1-2 with an RBI.
