In a rematch of the season-opener, the Fighting Scots dropped a
7-6 extra-inning decision to Wilmington College. Senior Kim
Fleissner (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) took the loss in her
first appearance of the season. Fleissner allowed two runs on two
hits in relief of starter Kim Kurchev (Mogadore, OH/Mogadore).
Kurchev, who notched a win against Wilmington in the teams
first meetings, went 6 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on seven
hits while striking out seven.
Edinboro scored the first run of the game in
the bottom of the second. Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge,
PA/Ambridge) singled with one out and scored on Leanne
Carmichaels (Pinehurst, MA/Billerica Memorial) double to
left center.
The Fighting Scots lead evaporated in the top
of the fourth when the Lady Wildcats erupted for five runs,
including a three-run home run, off of Kurchev.
Edinboro would get one run back in the bottom
of the fifth when leadoff batter Cyndi Carnaghi (White Plains,
NY/White Plains) doubled. The senior took third on a passed
ball and scored on a Wilmington error.
The Fighting Scots led off the bottom of the
seventh with a single by junior Hannah Kipfer (Meadville,
PA/Meadville). A strikeout by Jessica Lindamood
(Hartville, OH/Lake) and a fly out to center by Dana Webb
(Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) left the Fighting Scots with
just one out to produce three runs to tie the game.
Edinboro answered with a two-out rally started
by Vanessa Roses (Akron, OH/Manchester) single which
scored Kipfer. Iorfido then connected with a double, her fourth
hit of the day, to plate Rose from first. Carmichael grounded to
third and it looked like the Fighting Scots comeback was
over, but Wilmingtons first basemen could not control her
stretch and lost control of the ball, allowing Iorfido to score
for the tying run.
The international tie-breaker placed Wilmingtons
Nicole Hays on second to open up the eighth inning. Hays scored on
Jamie Gallaghers single and Gallagher would come around to
score on Kelly Schirmers double.
The Fighting Scots mounted another comeback in
the bottom of the eighth but came up short. Katelyn Gurgiolo
(Stow, OH/Medina) entered the game as a pinch-runner and would
score from second on a Wilmington error, but the Edinboro offense
could not produce another run.
Pacing the Fighting Scot offense were
Carmichael and Iorfido. Carmichael went 1-4 at the plate and
knocked in two runs. Iorfido was a perfect 4-4 at the plate and
knocked in one run.
Winona State 10,
Edinboro 1
A combination of the powerful offense of Winona St. and the
error-plagued defense of the Fighting Scots gave Edinboro its
second loss of the day and third straight. Winona St. took
advantage of eight hits and six walks, along with three costly
Edinboro errors, to defeat the Fighting Scots 10-1 in five
innings.
Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake)
took the loss for Edinboro. The junior lasted just one inning,
giving up seven runs, five earned, on six hits. Sophomore Mary
Lynn Arlotta (N. Tonawanda, NY/Mount St. Mary Academy) worked
three innings and gave up three runs, two earned. In her first
appearance of the season, freshman Chrissy Durkee (Meadville,
PA/Meadville) gave up no runs, no hits and struck out one.
Katelyn Gurgiolo (Stow, OH/Medina) reached
on an error to start the game and scored on a single by Vanessa
Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) for the Fighting Scots only run of
the game. Cyndi Carnaghi (White Plains, NY/White Plains)
and Chelsea Bosak (Punsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) recorded
the only other two hits by Edinboro.
The Fighting Scots conclude their spring
training trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Ft. Myers,
FL with a 5-3 record. Edinboro is back in action on March 25 at
Fairmont State.
