EDINBORO, PA Defense was at a premium on
Friday in the inaugural NABC/NCAA Division II All-Star Game in
Springfield, Mass. The final score ended with the West All-Stars
defeating the East All-Stars, 134-122. The contest was part of the
Elite Eight festivities and was played at the Naismith Memorial
Basketball Hall of Fame.
Edinboros Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks,
PA/Montour) started at forward for the East squad and finished
with 10 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of action. The 68
senior made 3 of 5 field goals, missing his lone three-point
attempt, along with 4 of 8 free throws. He had one steal.
Ryan Diggs of Western Washington and Franz
Steyn of Southwest Baptist were Co-Most Outstanding Players for
the West. Diggs scored a game-high 25 points, while Steyn had 18
points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Tayron Thomas of Philadelphia
was named the Easts Most Outstanding Player, ending the
evening with 18 points and seven boards.
The two teams combined for 182 shots, including
71 three-point attempts. The score was 62-58 in favor of the West
at the half. The West went on to score 72 points in the second
half while shooting a sizzling 61.7 percent from the floor.
Tielsch led Edinboro to a 21-10 record this
past season, as the Fighting Scots won their second straight PSAC
championship and earned the leagues automatic bid to the
NCAA Playoffs. He finished as the teams leading scorer and
rebounder while earning first team All-PSAC West honors.
