Official Press Release

Fighting Scots Split Softball Twinbill at Fairmont State
Rose Tosses Three-Hitter in Opener
March 25, 2006

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University softball team opened the northern portion of its schedule with a doubleheader split at Fairmont State on Saturday. The Fighting Scots won the first game behind a strong outing from Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester), 3-1, before committing five errors in the nightcap and dropping a 7-0 decision.

Edinboro is now 6-4 while Fairmont State shows a 10-16 ledger. The Fighting Scots will play another twinbill in West Virginia on Sunday, playing at Wheeling Jesuit.

Rose improved to 2-1 with a strong effort against the Falcons. The sophomore went the distance, tossing a three-hitter while giving up just one unearned run. She walked three and struck out seven.

The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Dana Webb (Amherst, NY/Williamsvile South) led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on Danielle Arno’s (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) sacrifice fly. Arnold, a freshman, also plated the second run, as Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) singled in the fourth inning and moved to second on a passed ball before scoring on Arno’s single. The scots added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Iorfido sacrifice fly.

The win in the first game snapped a three-game losing streak, but Edinboro was unable to maintain the momentum in the second contest, managing just four hits while committing five errors. Amy Filius shut the Scots down, not allowing a walk and striking out five. She got all the support she needed from Julie Bolyard, who belted a two-run homer in the second inning. The Falcons plated four runs in the second and two in the third.

Katelyn Gurgiolo (Stow, OH/Medina) went 2-for-3 for the Scots. Mary Lynn Arlotta (North Tonawanda, NY/Mount St. Mary Academy) fell to 2-1 while going the distance, allowing five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in six innings. She gave up five earned runs.
