Edinboro Splits Softball Doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit
March 26, 2006

The Edinboro softball team won the first half of a doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit, 5-3, but could not complete the sweep, falling 6-2 in the second game. Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) improved to 3-1, throwing seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 batters. The sophomore allowed three runs on five hits and walked five.

The Fighting Scots are now 7-5 and play at Walsh on Tuesday, March 28 before opening up conference play on Friday, March 31 at home against Indiana (Pa.).

Katelyn Gurgiolo (Stow, OH/Medina) led off game one with an infield single and then stole second base. Dana Webb (Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) followed with a triple to score freshman Gurgiolo and Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) then singled to score Webb.

Edinboro would take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Iorfido recorded her second single of the day, moving to second on Leanne Carmichael’s (Pinehurst, MA/Billerica Memorial) sacrifice. Iorfido came around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Danielle Arno (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius).

Wheeling Jesuit would score two runs in the bottom half of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at three runs apiece, but the Fighting Scots would add two more runs in the top of the sixth for the game’s final score.

Iorfido and Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake) both finished the day 2 for 3 at the plate, while Arno contributed two RBIs.

In the second contest, Edinboro was unable to make it two in a row over Wheeling Jesuit. Dana Webb (Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) scored the Fighting Scots first run in the top of the first, cranking a triple and then scoring on the Wheeling Jesuit throwing error. Edinboro’s lead would not last for long as Wheeling Jesuit responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, one in the third and two in the fifth.

Trailing 6-1 in the top of the sixth, Edinboro would score its second and final run of the game. Mary Lynn Arlotta (N. Tonawanda, NY/Mount St. Mary Academy) doubled with two outs to plate Danielle Arno (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) but was picked off after taking a wide turn around second to end the inning.

Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake) took the loss for the Scots, falling to 1-2 on the season. The junior gave up six earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three.
