Official Press Release

Edinboro Softball Sweeps Clarion in PSAC West Doubleheader
April 8, 2006

Complete Box Scores
Game 1         Game 2

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University softball team picked up two conference wins on the road against PSAC West opponent Clarion, winning 9-0 and 7-0. With the victories, the Fighting Scots snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 10-12 overall, 3-3 in the PSAC West, while Clarion drops to 0-16 overall, 0-5 in the conference.

Sophomore Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) recorded both wins on the day, improving to 6-4 overall. She went the distance in game one, hurling a one-hitter against the Golden Eagles and threw four innings in game two. Rose picked up 12 strikeouts on the day and has 76 total, the 7th-highest season total in Edinboro history. The sophomore is fifth all-time for career strikeouts with 140.

Kim Kurchev (Mogadore, OH/Mogadore) pitched three hitless innings in relief of Rose, recording four strikeouts. The junior now has 94 career strikeouts, sixth all-time.

Offensively, all but one Fighting Scot had a hit in the first contest. Katelyn Gurgiolo (Stow, OH/Medina) led Edinboro at the plate, going 2-for-4, with two runs scored and two RBIs. Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) hit 3-for-4 with one run scored while Leanne Carmichael (Pinehurst, MA/Billerica Memorial) added two RBIs, and Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake), Jessica Cox (Cranesville, PA/Northwestern) and Hannah Kipfer (Meadville, PA/Meadville) each contributed one RBI.

In the second-half of the day’s action, the Fighting Scots’ offense continued to dominate, exploding for five runs in the third inning and one each in the fourth and fifth. Cox led off the inning with a single and beat out the throw to second on Kipfer’s fielder’s choice to give the Fighting Scots runners at first and second with no outs. Cyndi Carnaghi (White Plains, NY/White Plains) advanced the runners with a sacrifice and Cox would score on Rose’s single while Kipfer scored on a wild pitch. Then, freshman Danielle Arno (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) broke the game wide-open, ripping a bases-loaded double to plate three runs. She would finish the game 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs and one run scored.

Gurgiolo, Rose, Iorfido and Lindamood each added an RBI for the Fighting Scots.

Edinboro returns to action on Sunday, April 9, at home against California (Pa).
