Fighting Scots Drop Pair of Tight Softball Contests to California(Pa)
April 11, 2006

Complete Box Scores
Game 1         Game 2

EDINBORO, PA – It was a day of missed opportunities for the Edinboro University softball team, as the Fighting Scots dropped a pair of contests to visiting California(Pa.) on Tuesday. The Vulcans snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-0 win in the opener, then handed the Scots a 3-1 defeat in the nightcap.

Edinboro falls to 10-14 overall and is now 3-5 in PSAC West action. California(Pa.) evens its record to 10-10 and 4-4, respectively. Edinboro is back in action on Friday, April 14, playing a doubleheader at league-leading Lock Haven.

Katie Francart scattered six hits to post the shutout for Cal in the first game. The Vulcans jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on a triple down the right field line by Megan Timpf, followed by an RBI single to right by Jennifer Doty.

The Vulcans made it 2-0 in the top of the second inning as Stephanie Elk led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on Deanna Valentino’s single to shortstop with two outs.

Edinboro had a pair of excellent opportunities to score, but came up empty. In the third inning, the Fighting Scots loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, but Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) hit a comebacker to the mound which was turned into a 1-2-3 doubplay. In the fifth inning the Scots had runners on second and third with no outs, but Francart rose to the occasion, striking out the next two batters and ended the inning with a popout.

Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) was the hard luck loser, giving up six hits. The sophomore walked three and struck out five. Francart gave up just one walk and struck out eight while improving to 3-6.

Rose started the second game, as well, and turned in another strong showing, but defensive struggles doomed the Fighting Scots. All three runs were unearned as Edinboro committed five errors. Rose again allowed just six hits while not allowing a walk and striking out three. Rose has now struck out 84, the seventh-highest season total. She has a 6-6 record.

Cal again scored a run in the top of the first, as the Fighting Scots committed a pair of errors before Doty plated a run with a single. Edinboro tied the game in the bottom of the third thanks to a Cal miscue in the field. Hannah Kipfer (Meadville, PA/Meadville) reached on an error with one out, then moved to third on Cindy Carnaghi’s (White Plains, NY/White Plains) single down the right field line. When Carnaghi got into a rundown between first and second, Kipfer scooted home with the tying run.

The Scots had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth , putting runners on second and third with just one out. But Becky Mezyk struck out the next two batters to quall the rally. Edinboro would also have runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth, but another Mezyk strikeout ended the frame.

Cal took the lead with a run in the fifth, then scored an insurance run in the sixth. Valentino led off the fifth with a bunt single, and following a sacrifice and a passed ball, scored on an error. In the sixth, Elk led off with a triple, but was out at home on a squeeze attempt by Debbie Tedesco. The Vulcans would eventually score a run on a single by pinch hitter Brianna Smith with two outs, after the fifth Edinboro error kept the inning alive.

Mezyk improved to 7-3, giving up just two hits and a walk while striking out six.
