The Edinboro University softball team dropped
both ends of a PSAC West doubleheader at Indiana (Pa.), falling
5-0 in the first game and 3-1 in the second. The Fighting Scots
are now 10-16 overall and 3-7 in the conference. The Indians
improve to 17-12 overall, 8-2 in PSAC West action.
Edinboro travels to play Lock Haven on Monday,
April 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Bald Eagles are ranked seventh in
Division II by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester)
took the loss for the Fighting Scots in the first contest, giving
up eight hits and striking out five. The sophomore allowed just
one hit through the first five innings but could not escape
trouble in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, IUP used seven
consecutive hits, including a 2-RBI triple by Jodie Swavely, to
plate five runs for the games final score.
The Fighting Scots had runners in scoring
position in each of the first three innings, including a
bases-loaded opportunity in the third, but could not push a run
across the board against Swavely. IUPs senior pitcher struck
out seven en route to her seventh shutout performance of the year.
Rose, Dana Webb (Amherst, NY/Williamsville
South), Mandie Iorfido (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) and Hannah
Kipfer (Meadville, PA/Meadville) each went 2-for-3 at the
plate.
In the second half of the twin-bill, IUP took
an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added another run
in the bottom of the third. Edinboro would score its only run of
the game in the top of the sixth when Leanne Carmichael
(Pinehurst, MA/Billerica Memorial) reached on an error and
advanced to second on the sacrifice by Danielle Arno (Manlius,
NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). Jessica Lindamood (Hartville,
OH/Lake) moved pinch-runner Ashleigh Smith (Mars, PA/Mars)
to third and Kipfers double scored Smith for the games
final score.
Rose recorded her second loss of the day,
giving up five hits and two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. The
losses move Rose to 6-8 on the year. Kim Kurchev (Mogadore,
OH/Mogadore) pitched four innings in relief, allowing five
hits and one earned run.
Katelyn Gurgiolo (Stow, OH/Medina) led
the Fighting Scots, going 3-for-4 at the plate while Webb hit
2-for-4.
