Official Press Release

Edinboro Softball Falls to Nationally Ranked Lock Haven
April 22, 2006

Complete Box Scores
Game 1          Game 2

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University softball team fell twice in a PSAC West doubleheader to Lock Haven, the fifth-ranked team in Division II by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, losing 1-0 in the first contest and 8-2 in the second.

The Fighting Scots played flawless defense against the Lady Eagles in the first half of the twin-bill, but could not get the bats going against Lock Haven’s Kristin Erb. The freshman allowed just five hits and struck out eight.

The only run of the game scored in the third inning. Vanessa Rose (Akron, OH/Manchester) hit Lock Haven’s Courtney Hughes and next batter Danielle Fraser doubled with one out to score Hughes from first. Rose went the distance, giving up eight hits and striking out five.

Lock Haven threatened again in the top of the fourth with two out and runners on first and second, but centerfielder Cyndi Carnaghi (White Plains, NY/White Plains) fired a strike for the inning’s final out to third baseman Danielle Arno (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), catching Lock Haven runner Julia Popovich trying to go first-to-third before the runner on second could score.

In the second game, Lock Haven jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Fighting Scots would come back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. With two outs, Arno reached on an error by the catcher and Jessica Lindamood (Hartville, OH/Lake) followed with a single while Hannah Kipfer (Meadville, PA/Meadville) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carnaghi then drilled a single to plate Arno and Lindamood. Edinboro would not score again on the day, while Lock Haven answered with four runs in the top of the fifth and one each in the top of the sixth and seventh innings.

Rose took the loss in game two, throwing six innings and striking out five. The sophomore falls to 8-13 on the season. Kim Kurchev (Mogadore, OH/Mogadore) threw an inning in relief of Rose, allowing one earned run on three hits.

The Fighting Scots fall to 12-22 overall, 5-11 in the PSAC West, while league-leading Lock Haven improves to 37-3, 16-0 in the PSAC West. Edinboro hosts PSAC West opponent Clarion in its final regular season home doubleheader on Friday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m.
