EDINBORO, PA First-year head coach Scott
Browning will welcome 93 players to camp Tuesday as the Edinboro
University football team begins preseason drills. The Fighting
Scots come off an 8-2 finish a year ago, and begin pursuit of
their fourth straight PSAC West championship. A year ago Edinboro
shared the title with California(Pa.).
The first two days of camp will feature
physicals, meetings, and the issue of equipment. The Fighting
Scots will take the field for their first official practice on
Thursday, August 10 at 2:25 p.m. That day will mainly feature the
annual fitness test. Browning will put his charges through single
sessions on Friday through Monday, as well, before the first
double session workouts take place on Tuesday, August 15. The
morning session will run from 8:20-10:45 a.m., with the afternoon
practice scheduled for 2:50-5:05 p.m.
Browning had served as an assistant coach at
Edinboro for twenty seasons before being promoted to head coach in
January. He takes over a team with high expectations, thanks in no
small part to seven returning starters on a defensive unit that
led Division II in scoring defense (9.3 ppg.), total defense
(211.2 ypg.), and rushing defense (53.7 ypg.). Edinboro was
recently picked second in the PSAC West Coaches Preseason Poll,
with California(Pa.) the favorite. In addition, the Fighting Scots
have been ranked 15th in Division II by Lindys
Magazine and 18th by Football Gazette. A total of 37 letterwinners
return, including 14 starters.
Edinboro opens the 2006 campaign on Saturday,
September 2 at West Chester. The Golden Rams were 8-4 a year ago
and reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs. They were selected xx
in the PSAC East Preseason Poll. The Fighting Scots will make
their home debut under Browning the following week, hosting St.
Anselm.
