August 24, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Edinboro University women’s soccer coach Gary Kagiavas knows all too well that soccer can be a strange game. He was reminded of that as his Fighting Scots opened the 2006 campaign this afternoon. Despite dominating play against Shippensburg, Edinboro came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision in the season opener for both teams.

Edinboro was unable to take advantage of numerous scoring opportunities, while the Lady Raiders chances were limited but they made the most of them. The Fighting Scots held a 24-13 edge in shots.

Shippensburg scored just four minutes and 41 seconds into the match as Jamie Goetze knocked a long shot over the head of goalkeeper Lisa Bartolowits (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area), assisted by Rachael Jeffrey. The goal came with Edinboro playing a man down due to an injury.

The score remained 1-0 at the half despite Edinboro holding a 12-6 advantage in shots. The Fighting Scots finally knotted the game at 1-1 at the 57:19 mark as Angie de Almedia (Gibsonia, PA/ Pine-Richland) beat Shippensburg goalkeeper Bethany Long from five yards out on the right side. Freshman Maria Dembrow (Lockport, NY/Lockport) assisted on the goal.

Shippensburg took a 3-1 lead with a pair of goals in less than nine minutes. Jeffrey knocked a shot over Bartolowits’ head from 15 yards out, assisted by Gayle Knutzmann, to make it 2-1 at the 66:42 mark. Kuntzmann followed with a goal at the 74:45 mark. Kellye Von Stetten passed to Kristen McGoldrick, who found Kuntzmann in front of the goal. Kuntzmann headed the ball in from 10 yards out to make it 3-1.

The Fighting Scots were not done, narrowing the gap to 3-2 as the de Almeida-Dembrow combination scored again at the 77:14 mark. This time de Almeida took a pass from Dembrow following a turnover and scored from ten yards out. The junior forward moved into a tie fir ninth place in career scoring with 34 points. Edinboro was unable to come up with the tying score.

Long was outstanding in goal for the Lady Raiders. The sophomore recorded 11 saves. Bartolowits, in her second career start, was credited with three saves.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, August 26, hosting California(Pa.) in its PSAC West opener. The match starts at 1:00 p.m.
