EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
womens soccer team opened PSAC West action with an
impressive offensive display, scoring three times in the first
half on its way to a 4-2 win over visiting California(Pa.). Both
teams are now 1-1-0 overall.
Head coach Gary Kagiavas entered the season
looking for a dependable scorer, and if the first two matches are
any indication, the combination of Angie de Almeida (Gibsonia,
PA/Pine-Richland) and freshman Maria Dembrow (Lockport,
NY/Lockport) should suffice.
After combining for two goals in Thursdays
3-2 loss to Shippensburg, both scored by de Almeida, the duo
accounted for three more goals on Saturday. de Almeida once again
scored all three goals, assisted by Dembrow.
The first two goals came in lightning fashion,
as the Fighting Scots led 2-0 less than 15 minutes into the match.
de Almeida scored from five yards out on the left side after a
nice pass from Dembrow for the initial goal just 2:54 into the
match. The two were at it again at the 14:26 mark, with Dembrows
pass following a turnover leading to de Almeidas goal from
17 yards out on the left side.
Edinboro made it 3-0 with just seven seconds
remaining in the first half as Kara Ciacchini (Erie,
PA/McDowell) scored her first goal of the season from 10 yards
in front of the goal. Freshmen Emily Leone (Erie, PA/McDowell)
assisted on the goal.
California(Pa.) ruined the shutout on Amanda
Heisters goal at 51:56, assisted by Lindsey Deaner. The
Fighting Scots built the margin back up to three goals at the
60:07 mark as de Almeida scored her third goal of the contest and
fifth of the young season on a breakaway. Once again, it was
Dembrow assisting, as she has on all five goals.
The Vulcans accounted for the final goal with
just one second left in the match as Heister scored her second
goal of the game and third of the season, coming off a long pass
from Katie Yohe.
Freshman Samantha Cairns (Natrona Heights,
PA/Highlands) started her first game in goal and recorded 5
saves. Cairns was one of four freshmen in the Edinboro starting
lineup. Cal goalkeeper Erin Cook had several brilliant saves among
her 8 saves.
de Almeida has now moved into eighth place in
career scoring with 40 points, and now has 17 career goals, good
for sixth place.
Edinboro returns to action on Friday, September
1, playing Millersville in the Millersville Tournament.
