EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
cross country teams opened the 2006 campaign with a strong showing
in the 6th Annual Bill Sudeck Classic, hosted by Case Western
Reserve University. The womens team had all five point
producers finish in the top 20 as Edinboro placed first among 14
teams. The men, meanwhile, brought home second place from a field
of 12 teams.
In addition to the team finishes, Edinboro
runners won the individual titles in both the womens and mens
races. Rachael Lanzel (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) won the
womens race, while Dave Niemira (Strongsville,
OH/Strongsville) crossed the finish line first on the mens
side.
Lanzel covered the 5k course in a time of
18:31.80 to edge Case Westerns Esther Erb, who finished less
than a second behind. A pair of freshmen were next for the
Fighting Scots, as Becca Nungesser (Clarence Center,
NY/Clarence) placed 13th (19:46.50) and Erica Bourgeois
(Boonville, NY/Adirondack) was 14th (19:47.40). Ashley
Ferraro (Erie, PA/Northwest Collegiate Academy/Central) was
next, finishing 17th with a time of 19:51.50, with yet another
freshman, Kristine Beringer (Lockport, NY/Lockport)
placing 20th (19:55.70). Kelly Bergeron (Wallingsford,
CT/Lyman Hall) was not far behind the top five, finishing 26th
(20:10.90).
Niemira, meanwhile, easily outdistanced the
competition in the mens race, covering the 8k course
26:00.10. that was five seconds faster than Ryan Place of
Allegheny, who finished second. Josh Arthur (Brantingham,
NY/South Lewis Central) brought home fourth place (26:21.10),
with Jeff McCabe (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) finishing 12th
(27:09.00). Freshman Eric Brenner (Wooster, OH/Wooster)
placed 16th (27:18.10) and David Blend (North Canton,
OH/Hoover) was next in 20th place (27:32.90). Freshman Ryan
Sheer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added a 33rd place finish
(27:57.00), with Andy Thoman (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville)
coming in 37th (28:04.30).
Edinboro will return to action on Friday,
September 15, competing in the Michigan State Invitational.
