EDINBORO, PA After playing in a pair of
tournaments to open the 2006 season, the Edinboro University
volleyball team finally had the opportunity to play a match in the
friendly confines of McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots took
advantage of the home court advantage to defeat Wheeling Jesuit in
three games, 30-18, 30-21, 30-22. The victory boosts Edinboro to
3-6 while Wheeling Jesuit fell to 1-5.
Head coach Missy Soboleski is using a trio of
freshmen extensively, but it was junior Jenna Newman (Las
Vegas, NV/Coronado) who led the way. The 510
middle hitter finished with 16 kills and a scintillating .538
hitting percentage. Newman also had 3 service aces. Junior outside
hitter Breanna Smith (North Canton, OH/Hoover) added 11
kills, 3 service aces and 3 block assists.
Freshman outside hitter Olivia Williams
(Barberton, OH/Barberton) finished with 8 kills, while Brittany
Slauterbeck (Port Clinton, OH/Oak Harbor), a freshman middle
hitter, had 7 kills and 4 total blocks. Senior setter Ashley
Cottengim (Fairport, NY/Fairport) totaled 37 assists, while
junior outside hitter Jenna Benkelman (Eden, NY/Eden) led
the Scots in digs with 10.
Edinboro will open PSAC West action on Tuesday,
September 12 hosting Indiana(Pa.) at 7:00 p.m.
