EDINBORO, PA Ulysee Spud
Davis (Bryans Road, MD/Bishop McNamara) scored four touchdowns
to lead the Edinboro University football team to a 54-0 win over
visiting St. Anselm in the home opener for the Fighting Scots. It
marked the first meeting between the two schools and the first
time the Fighting Scots have won their first two games since the
2002 season.
The loss is the eleventh straight for St.
Anselm, dating back to last season. The Hawks, members of the
Northeast-10 Conference, are now 0-2.
Edinboro scored two touchdowns in every quarter
while rolling to the win. The Fighting Scots finished with 438
yards in total offense while limiting St. Anselm to 85 total
yards. Showcasing a balanced attack, the Fighting Scots finished
with 228 yards on the ground and 210 yards through the air. The
Hawks managed just 30 yards rushing against an Edinboro defense
which held West Chester to 49 yards last week. Edinboro led
Division II in rushing defense a year ago, along with scoring
defense and total defense.
Edinboros first possession of the game
resulted in a punt, but the Fighting Scots proceeded to score on
their next four possessions. Davis, a sophomore tailback, scored
the first three touchdowns of the game for Edinboro. The first
came on a 24-yard run to cap a short two play drive after a
shanked punt by St. Anselm gave the Boro the ball at the Hawks 24.
Kody Robertsons (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) extra point
was no good.
An interception by Houston Brown
(Westerville, OH/Westerville), a true freshman making his
first start at cornerback, gave Edinboro the ball back three plays
later. Taking over at the St. Anselm 35, the Fighting Scots needed
six plays to reach paydirt, with Davis scoring on a 14-yard run at
the 4:01 mark. Robertsons PAT was true, giving Edinboro a
14-0 lead.
Edinboro put together a pair of 65 yard drives
in the second quarter to go up 27-0 at the half. The first came
following a St. Anselm punt, and took nine plays, with Davis
scoring on a four-yard run with 12:06 left in the second quarter.
Following a St. Anselm punt, the Fighting Scots
needed just six plays to cover 65 yards, with the Trevor
Harris (Waldo, OH/Marion Pleasant) to Kyle Witucki
(Tarentum, PA/Highlands) combination doing most of the damage.
Harris, a redshirt freshman, completed three passes for 64 yards
to Witucki in the drive, the final one for a 28-yard touchdown.
With Robertsons extra point, Edinboro led 27-0 with 7:03 to
play.
Edinboro boosted the margin to 33-0 after its
first possession of the third quarter as Davis scored his fourth
touchdown, one shy of the school record held by Elbert Cole. This
one came from 19 yards out to cap a five-play, 53-yard march.
Robertsons kick was wide left, leaving the lead at 33-0 with
11:41 left.
The Fighting Scots put together their longest
drive of the afternoon late in the period, going 75 yards on 12
plays. Backup tailback Chaz Cobbs (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills)
did most of the damage, carrying eight times for 47 yards. The
sophomore scored his first career touchdown on a seven-yard run
with 1:05 left in the third quarter, with Robertsons extra
point giving Edinboro a 40-0 lead.
Edinboro tacked on two more scores in the
fourth quarter. The first came after an Edinboro punt hit a St.
Anselm player, with Rodney Stevenson (Bedford, OH/Warrensville
Heights) recovering at the six. After a loss of two yards,
Jay Van Leer (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) scored his
first career touchdown on an eight-yard run with 11:34 to play.
Rich Cerro (Franklin, PA/Franklin) set
up the next score when he returned a St. Anselm punt 20 yards to
the Edinboro 46. In a pair of first, Joe Wanson (DuBois,
PA/DuBois) threw his first career touchdown pass to Deonte
Peters (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights), who took a
short pass and made several impressive moves to complete a 22-yard
scoring play. It was Peters first career touchdown
reception.
Davis paced the Edinboro ground game with 141
yards on 18 carries, his fourth career 100-yard game. In addition,
he caught 3 passes for 39 yards. After rushing for 120 yards in
the season opener at West Chester, Cobbs finished with 68 yards on
13 carries. Harris was impressive once again at quarterback,
completing 13 of 25 passes for 170 yards with a touchdown and an
interception. Witucki hauled in 5 passes for 80 yards.
Ryan Drago paced St. Anselms ground
attack with 11 carries for 24 yards. Geoff Stevens completed 8 of
18 passes for 55 yards.
Edinboro is back at Sox Harrison Stadium next
Saturday, September 16, hosting nationally-ranked Bloomsburg. The
Huskies are the preseason favorites in the PSAC East and entered
the week ranked 13th in the AFCA Division II Top 25.
