EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
volleyball team hosted Indiana(Pa.) in the PSAC West opener for
both teams on Tuesday night. The Fighting Scots trailed late in
the match in every game, yet came away with a 3-1 win over the
visiting Indians. Edinboro prevailed by scores of 30-27, 30-26,
27-30, and 30-25.
The Fighting Scots improve to 4-6 overall, and
are right back in action on Wednesday at Malone. That match starts
at 7:00 p.m. IUP falls to 2-4.
Edinboro was down 23-20 and 25-23 in the first
game, yet came back to win. The pivotal second game saw the
Fighting Scots go from a 20-18 deficit to a 26-20 lead with Breanna
Smith (North Canton, OH/Hoover) serving. The junior outside
hitter recorded a pair of service aces in the run, and for the
night had a career-high 7 service aces.
The Fighting Scots were unable to overcome a
9-2 deficit to start the third game, although they closed to
within 28-27 at one point. Edinboro actually jumped out to a big
lead in the fourth game, 7-1, only to see the Indians rally for a
21-20 lead. The Scots ran off the next three points and never
trailed again.
Jenna Newman (Las Vegas, NV/Coronado) led
the Scots with 13 kills and had a block solo and 3 block assists.
Freshman Olivia Williams (Barberton, OH/Barberton)
finished with 11 kills. In addition to her service aces, Smith
contributed 9 kills and a pair of block assists. Brittany
Slauterbeck (Port Clinton, OH/Oak Harbor), another freshman
seeing considerable action, totaled 8 kills and 5 block assists.
Ashley Cottengim (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 39 assists.
