EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
and womens cross country teams wont let a little thing
like injuries get them down. Both squads will be without key
performers this year, but it didnt stop the Fighting Scots
from turning in a strong performance at the Spartan Invitational
in East Lansing, MI.
The mens team placed third out of 11
teams with 105 points, with Michigan finishing first with 24
points and Michigan State second with 33 points. The womens
team, meanwhile, came in fourth in the nine-team field with 109
points. Michigan State was first (19 points), followed by Western
Michigan (74) and Oakland (92).
Dave Niemira (Strongsville,
OH/Strongsville) turned in his second straight strong
performance. After finishing first at the Bill Dudeck Classic at
Case Western Reserve University, the junior placed ninth with a
time of 25:48. Niemira was the first non-Division I runner to
cross the finish line.
Josh Arthur (Turin, NY/South Lewis Central)
finished 16th for the Fighting Scots with a time of 26:28, and was
just the second non-Division I runner to finish. Jeff McCabe
(Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) was 19th (26:40) and the third
non-Division I runner, David Blend (North Canton, OH/Hoover)
was 35th (27:42), Eric Brenner (Wooster, OH/Wooster) was
44th (28:02), Andy Thoman (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville)
was 51st (28:27), Chris Lantinen (Gasport, NY/Barker Central)
was 61st (28:49), and Ryan Sheer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)
was 85th (30:06).
On the womens side, Rachael Lanzel
(St. Marys, PA/St. Marys)) followed up her winning performance
at the Bill Sudeck Classic with an impressive sixth place showing.
Freshman Becca Nungesser (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence)
was next for the Fighting Scots, coming in 17th, with fellow
freshmen Erica Bourgeois (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) and
Kristine Beringer (Lockport, NY/Lockport) finishing 23rd
and 27th, respectively. Ashley Ferraro (Erie, PA/Central)
came in 39th and Kelly Bergeron (Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall)
was 56th.
Edinboro will host the Rag Relays on Saturday,
September 23.
