EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University men’s and women’s cross country teams won’t let a little thing like injuries get them down. Both squads will be without key performers this year, but it didn’t stop the Fighting Scots from turning in a strong performance at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, MI.

The men’s team placed third out of 11 teams with 105 points, with Michigan finishing first with 24 points and Michigan State second with 33 points. The women’s team, meanwhile, came in fourth in the nine-team field with 109 points. Michigan State was first (19 points), followed by Western Michigan (74) and Oakland (92).

Dave Niemira (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) turned in his second straight strong performance. After finishing first at the Bill Dudeck Classic at Case Western Reserve University, the junior placed ninth with a time of 25:48. Niemira was the first non-Division I runner to cross the finish line.

Josh Arthur (Turin, NY/South Lewis Central) finished 16th for the Fighting Scots with a time of 26:28, and was just the second non-Division I runner to finish. Jeff McCabe (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) was 19th (26:40) and the third non-Division I runner, David Blend (North Canton, OH/Hoover) was 35th (27:42), Eric Brenner (Wooster, OH/Wooster) was 44th (28:02), Andy Thoman (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) was 51st (28:27), Chris Lantinen (Gasport, NY/Barker Central) was 61st (28:49), and Ryan Sheer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 85th (30:06).

On the women’s side, Rachael Lanzel (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys)) followed up her winning performance at the Bill Sudeck Classic with an impressive sixth place showing. Freshman Becca Nungesser (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) was next for the Fighting Scots, coming in 17th, with fellow freshmen Erica Bourgeois (Boonville, NY/Adirondack) and Kristine Beringer (Lockport, NY/Lockport) finishing 23rd and 27th, respectively. Ashley Ferraro (Erie, PA/Central) came in 39th and Kelly Bergeron (Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall) was 56th.

Edinboro will host the Rag Relays on Saturday, September 23.
