EDINBORO, PA As head coach Scott
Browning noted afterwards, it wasnt pretty. But Edinboros
28-6 win at Cheyney on Saturday boosted the Fighting Scots to 3-1
heading into next weeks PSAC West opener against
Indiana(Pa.).
Offensively the Fighting Scots went back to the
basics, emphasizing the ground game. Edinboro ended the afternoon
with 161 yards on 41 carries, but even that is misleading as
Ulysee Spud Davis (Bryans Road, MD/Bishop McNamara)
exited the contest with over five minutes left in the second
quarter after rushing for 108 yards on 20 carries. It was the
sophomores second 100-yard effort of the season and fifth of
his career, as he went over 1,000 yards for his career with 1,093
yards.
Davis single-handedly led the Boro to its first
touchdown. After Ben Stroup (Columbus, OH/ Hilliard Davidson)
registered the first of his two interceptions to give Edinboro the
ball at the Cheyney 46, Davis carried eight times for 56 yards,
covering the final five yards for his sixth touchdown of the
season. The drive actually covered 46 yards on nine plays, all on
the ground, but a pair of penalties pushed the ball back. The
Fighting Scots had trouble with the yellow hankies all day,
committing nine penalties for 95 yards.
Edinboro would not its first pass of the game
until the second-to-the-last play in the first quarter, but when
the day was done redshirt freshman Trevor Harris ( Waldo,
OH/Marion Pleasant) had completed 14 of 16 passes for 197 yards
with 3 TDs.
The Fighting Scots saw their second drive stall
on downs at the Cheyney 9 early in the second quarter, but they
were back in business after Tom Davidson (Geneva, OH/Geneva)
partially blocked a punt. The punt covered just two yards to the
Edinboro 49. Edinboro needed 11 plays to cover the remaining 51
yards. Davis again played a large role, carrying four times for 22
yards. On third and goal, Harris found freshman TE Brad Gossett
(Perry, OH/Perry) open over the middle for a five-yard touchdown
pass. It was Gossetts first career touchdown reception. Kody
Robertsons (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) second of four
extra points made it 14-0.
After a three-and-out series, along with a five
yard punt that gave the ball at the Boro at the Cheyney 33,
Edinboro struck quickly to make it 21-0. Harris hit Ryan Valasek
(Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) on a 33-yard scoring pass with
2:47 left in the half.
Cheyney scored its lone touchdown of the game
on the final play of the second quarter, although not without some
dispute. Derrick Murry evaded the Edinboro rush and delivered a
22-yard TD pass to Dominique Curry. It appeared that Murry was
over the line of scrimmage when he released the ball. The extra
point was wide left, giving Edinboro a 21-6 lead at the half.
While substituting liberally in the second
half, the Fighting Scots scored an insurance touchdown early in
the fourth quarter as Harris and Valasek hooked up on a 21-yard
scoring play. The play came after Stroup picked off his second
pass and returned it 14 yards to the Cheyney 21.
Stroup, who was named the PSAC West Defensive
Player of the Week following the Bloomsburg game, turned in
another stellar effort with 7 tackles, the two interceptions, and
a sack. The Fighting Scots limited Cheyney to just seven yards
rushing, and the Wolves were at minus five yards until late in the
game. Edi nboro finished with 358 yards while Cheyney was held to
198 yards. A pair of Cheyney quarterbacks completed 19 of 42
passes and threw four interceptions.
In addition to Davis, Chaz Cobbs (Pittsburgh,
PA/Carrick) ran for 46 yards on 14 carries. Valasek hauled in 4
passes for 100 yards, his second career 100-yard game. The senior
wide receiver moved into fifth place in career touchdowns
receiving with 15. Kyle Witucki (Tarentum, PA/Highlands) added 4
receptions for 35 yards, with Gossett catching 3 passes for 20
yards.
In addition to Stroups two pickoffs,
Houston Brown (Westerville, OH/Westerville Central) came up with
his team-high third interception, and Taurean Valentine
(Allentown, PA/Dieruff) had his second of the year. Freshman CB
Justin McKissick (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South) recorded a
career-high 7 tackles.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday,
September 30, hosting Indiana(Pa.) in the PSAC West opener for
both teams.
