Official Press Release

Fighting Scots Dominate in 2-0 Women's Soccer Win Over Salem International
Grebenc, de Almeida account for Boro goals
September 27, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s soccer team snapped a two-match losing streak on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over visiting Salem International. The Fighting Scots evened their record at 5-5-0 while Salem International dropped to 2-8.

The two goals represented the most since a 4-0 win over Millersville on September 1, the third match of the season. But the Fighting Scots had numerous scoring opportunities and failed to score, in part due to the brilliant play of goalkeeper Jess Jones. Edinboro dominated in shots, taking 43 compared to just one for the Lady Tigers. Jones recorded 17 saves. Lisa Bartolowits (Pittsburgh, PA/ Shaler Area) picked up her third shutout in goal for the Fighting Scots.

After failing to score on its first 18 shots, Edinboro finally found the net as Mary Grebenc (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) scored her second goal of the season on a short shot from the left side of the net at 39:07. Janelle Layton (Johnstown, PA/Richland) and Ashley Jones (Erie, PA/Fairview) picked up assists on the goal. Layton fed Jones from the top of the box, with Jones’ touch pass finding Grebenc open in front of the net. Jones was the PSAC West Rookie of the Year while playing sweeper a year ago, but in an attempt to pick up the attack she saw considerable action in the midfield.

The Fighting Scots scored an insurance goal at the 84:17 mark. Freshman Maria Dembrow (Lockport, NY/Lockport) found Angie de Almeida (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) with a long pass from the right side, with de Almeida redirecting the ball into the net.

The goal was the eighth of the season for de Almeida, who returned recently after missing three matches with an injury. Dembrow has a team-high 6 assists.

Edinboro returns to action on Tuesday, October 3, hosting Slippery Rock in a PSAC West match.
