EDINBORO, PA An injury-ravaged Edinboro
University womens soccer team saw its hopes for a second
straight appearance in the PSAC Playoffs take a severe hit on
Tuesday with a 2-1 loss to Slippery Rock. The setback dropped the
Fighting Scots to 5-6-0 overall and 2-5-0 in PSAC West action,
while The Rock improved to 8-4-1 and 6-2-0, respectively.
With the loss, Edinboro continues to trail
Indiana(Pa.) (6-1-0), Slippery Rock (6-2-0), Lock Haven (4-3-0)
and California(Pa.) (3-5-0) in the Western Division standings. The
top three teams from each division qualify for the playoffs.
California(Pa.) was playing Clarion this afternoon. Edinboro has
just three league contests remaining.
Following a scoreless first half, Slippery Rock
took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Mallory Neubert. Neuberts
shot into the left corner of the net beat Boro goalie Lisa
Bartolowits, who recorded nine saves on the day. The goal at the
66:09 mark was Neuberts fifth of the season.
The Rock boosted the lead to 2-0 when Meghan
McGrath took a pass from Jaimi Wilson and scored her third goal of
the season from 12 yards out on the right side at 78:32.
The Fighting Scots would cut the lead in half
just over three minutes later on a goal from freshman Maria
Dembrow (Lockport, NY/Lockport), who took a rebound from a
free kick by Ashley Jones (Erie, PA/ Fairview) in front of
the net for her second goal of the season.
Slippery Rock held a 20-12 advantage in shots.
Jen McCormick had seven saves in goal for SRU.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, October
7, hosting league-leading Indiana(Pa.). The Homecoming match gets
underway at 12 noon.
