Official Press Release

East Stroudsburg Hands Edinboro 12-0 Football Loss
Fighting Scots Shut Out for Second Straight Week
October 14, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – Snowfall before the game left Sox Harrison Stadium slippery and muddy on Saturday. During the game the Fighting Scot defense found 2005 Harlon Hill Trophy winner Jimmy Terwilliger just as slick. The senior quarterback led visiting East Stroudsburg to a 12-0 win, as the Warriors improved to 5-2 in the PSAC crossover game.

The loss dropped Edinboro to 3-4, as the Fighting Scots suffered back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1969. In addition, Edinboro lost its fourth straight game at home, something which previously hadn’t happened since 1978.

In all fairness, the Fighting Scot defense turned in another strong defense, limiting Terwilliger to 16 completions in 30 attempts for 199 yards, along with 45 yards rushing on 15 carries. He was sacked five times. He came into the game second in Division II in total offense with 314.2 ypg. The Warriors finished with 261 total yards, well below their average of 431.8 ypg. eighth in Division II.

But the Edinboro offense was never able to get untracked, one week after suffering a 10-0 shutout to California(Pa.). The Fighting Scots finished with 227 yards, and failed to rush for 100 yards for the third straight game with 71 yards. In addition, after averaging 228.3 ypg. over the last four games, Trevor Harris (Waldo, OH/Marion Pleasant) completed just 16 of 32 passes for 156 yards. He had thrown just four interceptions entering the contest, but was guilty of three pickoffs today.

East Stroudsburg took the opening kickoff and drove 72 yards on 10 plays. The Edinboro defense dug in and forced three straight incompletions after Terwilliger had moved the Warriors to the six, but Eric Petters came in and kicked a 22-yard field goal.

The Warriors went up 9-0 late in the first quarter, set up by a 30-yard punt return by Michael Wiggins. On 1st-and-10 from the EUP 28, Edinboro was called for a roughing the passer penalty, moving the ball to the 14. After a short run, Terwilliger hooked up with Evan Prall for their 10th touchdown this season on a 12 yard pass. Prall caught 6 passes for 67 yards. A bad snap forced holder Joe DeLuise to run for the conversion, and he was stopped short leaving ESU with a 9-0 lead.

East Stroudsburg added an insurance field goal with 3:26 remaining in the game, as Petters connected from 37 yards out despite slipping as he kicked the ball. It capped a 12-play, 44-yard drive.

After managing just 85 yards in the first half, the Edinboro offense came out in the third quarter and accumulated 93 yards while twice marching into ESU territory. The first drive stalled at the ESU 22, and on the second Harris’ pass fell incomplete with Edinboro facing a 4th-and-2 at the ESU 4.

In addition to the three interceptions, the Fighting Scots gave up four sacks and were guilty of 11 penalties for 94 yards. Ryan Valasek (Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) led the Fighting Scots with 6 receptions for 76 yards, becoming the sixth Edinboro receiver to catch 100 passes in his career. The senior now has 102 career receptions.

Ben Stroup (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Davidson) once again led the defensive effort with 9 tackles, while Jim Soltis (Garrettsville, PA/Cardinal) finished with 7 stops, including a pair of sacks. Tom Davidson (Geneva, OH/Geneva) recovered two fumbles.

After playing three straight games at home, Edinboro hits the highways the next two weeks, beginning with a trip to Clarion on Saturday, October 21. Kickoff is 6:00 p.m.
