EDINBORO, PA It was a day of firsts for
a pair of Edinboro University soccer players. Freshman Heather
Weismiller (McKean, PA/General McLane) and junior Rachel
Johnson (Medina, OH/Medina) each scored their first career
goals to lead Edinboro to a 2-0 win over visiting Lock Haven in a
PSAC West match.
While eliminated from PSAC playoff competition,
the Fighting Scots won their third straight match to improve to
8-7-0 overall and 3-6-0 in PSAC West action. Lock Haven falls to
8-10-0 and 4-5-0, respectively.
Playing in muddy, rainy and windy conditions,
Edinboro dominated action in the first half while having the wind
at its back. But while outshooting the Lady Eagles 13-6, the
Fighting Scots were unable to score.
They proceeded to notch two goals into the wind
in the second half. Weismiller accounted for the game-winner at
the 68:49 mark, as she took a nice touch pass in front of the net
from Ashley Pulman (LaSalle, ONT/ Sandwich Secondary) and
notched her first career goal from 12 yards out. Pulman, a
two-time All-PSAC West selection, was making just her second
appearance in the last eight matches due to injury.
The lead grew to2-0 at 79:13 as Johnson scored
her first goal on a sliding shot on the right side of the net. She
took a pass from Emily Leone (Erie, PA/McDowell), and with
the goalkeeper out of the net, just beat a sliding defender her
first goal.
The two goals were more than enough for
sophomore Lisa Bartolowits (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area),
who turned in a brilliant effort in goal. Bartolowits recorded her
fifth shutout of the season, one shy of the school record, picking
up seven saves. She now has back-to-back shutouts.
Edinboro concludes its season later this week
with back-to-back contests. On Thursday, October 19 the Fighting
Scots are at Clarion, followed by a Friday, October 20 match at
home against West Virginia Wesleyan.
