CLARION, PA In week number one of the
2006 campaign, Houston Brown was named the PSAC West Defensive
Player of the Week for his performance against West Chester. In
week number eight, he turned in a performance worthy of PSAC West
Offensive Player of the Week honors, leading Edinboro to a 13-0
win at Clarion.
Thats right, offense. The 59,
195 lb. freshman had started the last six games at cornerback, but
with Edinboros running game sagging and the top two
tailbacks ailing, Brown was moved to tailback earlier this week.
He proceeded to rush for 157 yards on 34 carries, jump-starting a
Fighting Scot ground game that had been held under 100 yards each
of the last three weeks.
The victory boosted Edinboro to 4-4 overall and
1-2 in the PSAC West, while Clarion fell to 1-7 and 0-3,
respectively. In addition, the Fighting Scots snapped a three-game
losing streak.
Edinboro saw its scoreless streak reach nine
quarters before finally reaching paydirt in the second quarter. Of
course, it was Brown doing the honors as a vaulted over a pair of
defenders at the goal line to complete a six-yard scoring run with
13:05 to play in the second quarter. The run capped a short
two-play, nine-yard drive after Ben Stroup has forced a Clarion
fumble which was recovered by Damion Malott at the Clarion nine.
Kody Robertson, who had missed a 39-yard field goal in the first
quarter, converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The Boros next possession resulted in
three points, as Robertson culminated a 12-play, 46-yard drive
with a 31-yard field goal with 3:46 to play in the half. Brown
carried six times for 35 yards in the drive, and Trevor Harris
completed an 18-yard pass to Ryan Valasek with Edinboro facing a
3rd-and-12 at its own 38. Two plays later Brown burst 23 yards to
the Clarion 24.
Robertson, a senior who entered the game just
2-for-7 in field goals this season, converted his second
three-pointer to start the second half, a 24-yarder which gave the
Fighting Scots a 13-0 lead with 8:11 to play.
The kick capped an impressive 13-play, 59-yard
drive which finally stalled at the Clarion 7. Harris was the focal
point of this march, completing four of six passes for 36 yards.
The redshirt freshman also kept the drive alive with a seven-yard
run on a 3rd-and-6 play.
Edinboros defense did the rest, although
the Fighting Scots did have a touchdown pass called back in the
fourth quarter. The Boro defense picked up its second shutout of
the season and second straight whitewashing of Clarion, limiting
the Golden Eagles to 167 total yards. Clarion managed just 48
yards rushing, and Tyler Huether was limited to 9 completions in
26 attempts. Eddie Emanuel, who came into the game ranked third in
the PSAC in rushing, was held to 23 yards on eight carries.
Stroup once again paced the defensive charge
with 9 tackle, 3 for losses. Malott had 7 tackles, a sack and a
fumble recovery. Tom Davidson snuffed out a Clarion drive with an
interception in the Boro end zone, his first of the season and
13th of his career.
Edinboro finished the night with 286 total
yards, 168 of that on the ground. Harris finished the night 11 of
21 for 118 yards. Valasek was his favorite target with 6 catches
for 79 yards. That moved the senior wide receiver into sixth place
in career receiving yards with 1,848. He has now caught at least
one pass in 23 straight games.
Edinboro returns to action next Saturday,
October 28, playing at Slippery Rock. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
