EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s cross country team won its ninth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship on Saturday. The Fighting Scots finished with 61 points to edge Kutztown’s total of 68 points. Slippery Rock was third with 88 points. Bloomsburg hosted the PSAC Championships.

The men’s team also turned in a strong showing, capturing second place behind Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles had three runners in the top ten to finish with 45 points, easily outdistancing the Fighting Scots, who had 100 points. Clarion was third with 107 points. It marked the fourth straight year Edinboro’s men’s team finished second.

This has been a season where both teams have been ravaged by injuries and have several key runners redshirting. The muddy conditions suited the Boro runners just fine, particularly Rachael Lanzel, who finished as the women’s individual champion. It marked the third straight year an Edinboro runner had captured the women’s individual crown. The junior, the 2005 runner-up, covered the 6,000 meter course in a time of 22:20 to finish 11 seconds ahead of IUP’s Nicole Blaesser. Lanzel earned All-PSAC honors for the third straight year.

Four women’s runners finished in the top 20, good for All-PSAC honors. Freshman Becca Nungesser was eighth (23:44), with sophomore Ashley Ferraro finishing 13th (24:08), and freshman Kristine Beringer 16th (24:11). Freshman Erica Bourgeois completed the Edinboro contingent with a 23rd place finish (24:31).

On the men’s side, Dave Niemira continued his strong season with a sixth place finish. The junior covered the men’s course of 8,000 meters in a time of 26:23 to earn All-PSAC honors for the first time. A total of three Boro men’s runners finished in the top 20 for All-PSAC accolades. Sophomore Josh Arthur was 11th (27:00) in his first PSAC championships, with freshmen Eric Brenner finishing 17th (27:16). The rest of the Edinboro runners included sophomore David Blend (28th – 27:33), freshman Ryan Sheer (38th – 27:51), senior Jeff McCabe (41st – 27:54), and redshirt freshman Andy Thoman (56th – 28:27).

Edinboro will compete in the NCAA Division II East Regional at Slippery Rock next Saturday, November 4.
