EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University wrestling team opened its 2006-07 season on Saturday with three wins in the Avalon Duals. The Fighting Scots, ranked 13th in the USA Today/ NWCA/InterMat Division I Preseason Coaches Poll, hosted the Avalon Duals for the fifth year, and ran their record to 14-1 in those five events, only this time the event took place in the ballroom of the Avalon Hotel in Erie, PA.

Edinboro ran its win streak to 16 straight matches, dating back to the 2004-05 campaign, thanks to a 36-3 win over Mercyhurst, followed by a 30-7 triumph over Stanford, and a 28-12 win over Maryland. In the other matches, Maryland came away with a pair of wins, defeating Stanford, 27-12, and Mercyhurst, 22-12. Stanford handed Mercyhurst a 28-19 defeat.

Five Fighting Scots won all three of their matches, but it was one who didn’t who drew the most attention. Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/Solon), a returning All-American at 165 lbs. and ranked fourth by InterMat and eighth by Amateur Wrestling News entering the weekend, started his season off with his 34th career fall, over Mercyhurst’s Hudson Harrison in a time of 4:51.

But in his second match against Stanford’s Brian Perry, Penn suffered an 11-8 loss. He fell behind 8-3 after one period and was unable to rally. The senior would come back for his second fall of the afternoon in his final bout, pinning Maryland’s Jason Kiessling at 6:24.

Alex Clemsen (Moberly, MO/Moberly) opened his final season in impressive fashion, winning all three of his matches, two for bonus points. The 184 pounder scored a major decision over Mercyhurst’s Trevor Gallo, 14-1, then won by decision over Zack Giesen of Stanford, 8-3, and finished the day with a technical fall over Josh Haines of Maryland, 16-1 (4:30). Clemsen, ranked third by InterMat and sixth by Amateur Wrestling News, improved his career record to 87-31.

Gregor Gillespie (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), an All-American as a true freshman at 149 lbs. a year ago and ranked third in every Division I poll, picked up three wins. He posted a major decision over Mercyhurst’s Don Cummings, 13-1, then won by technical fall over Steven Frehn of Stanford, 16-0 (2:29). In his final bout, he was an 8-3 winner over Maryland’s Andrew Schlaffer, an national qualifier a year ago who is ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News.

After competing at 125 lbs. a year ago, Ricky Deubel (Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) made a successful move up to 133 lbs. with three wins. He captured a major decision over Mercyhurst’s Braxdon Scaletta, 17-3, then won by decision over Cameron Teitelman of Stanford, 9-4, and finally decisioned Ryan Brown of Maryland, 6-3. Deubel is ranked 20th by Amateur Wrestling News.

Another wrestler who moved up a weight class and won all three matches was Joe Fendone (Salem, NH/Central Catholic(Mass.)). Fendone is actually ranked 20th by Amateur Wrestling News, but the sophomore will compete at heavyweight this year. He won by fall over Mercyhurst’s Mike Sullivan at 1:39, then posted a technical fall over Phillip Doerner of Stanford, 18-1 (6:05), then won by major decision over Jerry Afari of Maryland, 12-1.

Matt Hill (Freedom, PA/Freedom) completed the contingent of Boro wrestlers with three wins. Competing at 157 lbs., he won by decision over Andrew Lamncusa of Mercyhurst, 6-5, followed by a decision over Stanford’s Josh Zupancic, 3-2, and then a major decision over Maryland’s Mike McGill, 11-0. Hill is ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat.
