EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University
wrestling team opened its 2006-07 season on Saturday with three
wins in the Avalon Duals. The Fighting Scots, ranked 13th in the
USA Today/ NWCA/InterMat Division I Preseason Coaches Poll, hosted
the Avalon Duals for the fifth year, and ran their record to 14-1
in those five events, only this time the event took place in the
ballroom of the Avalon Hotel in Erie, PA.
Edinboro ran its win streak to 16 straight
matches, dating back to the 2004-05 campaign, thanks to a 36-3 win
over Mercyhurst, followed by a 30-7 triumph over Stanford, and a
28-12 win over Maryland. In the other matches, Maryland came away
with a pair of wins, defeating Stanford, 27-12, and Mercyhurst,
22-12. Stanford handed Mercyhurst a 28-19 defeat.
Five Fighting Scots won all three of their
matches, but it was one who didnt who drew the most
attention. Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/Solon), a returning
All-American at 165 lbs. and ranked fourth by InterMat and eighth
by Amateur Wrestling News entering the weekend, started his season
off with his 34th career fall, over Mercyhursts Hudson
Harrison in a time of 4:51.
But in his second match against Stanfords
Brian Perry, Penn suffered an 11-8 loss. He fell behind 8-3 after
one period and was unable to rally. The senior would come back for
his second fall of the afternoon in his final bout, pinning
Marylands Jason Kiessling at 6:24.
Alex Clemsen (Moberly, MO/Moberly)
opened his final season in impressive fashion, winning all three
of his matches, two for bonus points. The 184 pounder scored a
major decision over Mercyhursts Trevor Gallo, 14-1, then won
by decision over Zack Giesen of Stanford, 8-3, and finished the
day with a technical fall over Josh Haines of Maryland, 16-1
(4:30). Clemsen, ranked third by InterMat and sixth by Amateur
Wrestling News, improved his career record to 87-31.
Gregor Gillespie (Webster, NY/Webster
Schroeder), an All-American as a true freshman at 149 lbs. a
year ago and ranked third in every Division I poll, picked up
three wins. He posted a major decision over Mercyhursts Don
Cummings, 13-1, then won by technical fall over Steven Frehn of
Stanford, 16-0 (2:29). In his final bout, he was an 8-3 winner
over Marylands Andrew Schlaffer, an national qualifier a
year ago who is ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News.
After competing at 125 lbs. a year ago, Ricky
Deubel (Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) made a successful move up
to 133 lbs. with three wins. He captured a major decision over
Mercyhursts Braxdon Scaletta, 17-3, then won by decision
over Cameron Teitelman of Stanford, 9-4, and finally decisioned
Ryan Brown of Maryland, 6-3. Deubel is ranked 20th by Amateur
Wrestling News.
Another wrestler who moved up a weight class
and won all three matches was Joe Fendone (Salem, NH/Central
Catholic(Mass.)). Fendone is actually ranked 20th by Amateur
Wrestling News, but the sophomore will compete at heavyweight this
year. He won by fall over Mercyhursts Mike Sullivan at 1:39,
then posted a technical fall over Phillip Doerner of Stanford,
18-1 (6:05), then won by major decision over Jerry Afari of
Maryland, 12-1.
Matt Hill (Freedom, PA/Freedom)
completed the contingent of Boro wrestlers with three wins.
Competing at 157 lbs., he won by decision over Andrew Lamncusa of
Mercyhurst, 6-5, followed by a decision over Stanfords Josh
Zupancic, 3-2, and then a major decision over Marylands Mike
McGill, 11-0. Hill is ranked 14th by Amateur Wrestling News and
17th by InterMat.
Edinboro returns to action on Sunday, November
12, competing at the Michigan State Open.
