EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University women’s basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with an 86-72 win over Goldey-Beacom on Friday in the Millersville Tournament. Coach Stan Swank’s team made it five straight wins in season openers.

In the first meeting ever between the two schools, all five Edinboro starters scored in double figures. That included a pair of freshmen making their first collegiate appearance. Samantha Reimer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored a game-high 25 points in just 23 minutes. The 5’7” freshman made 10 of 13 field goals, including her lone three-point attempt, and was 4 of 6 from the line. Fellow freshman Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) finished with 12 markers as the two freshmen combined for 37 points.

Rae Sherred (Cambridge Springs, PA/Cambridge Springs) followed with 14 points, all in the first half, with Rachel Johnson (Oreland, PA/Springfield) also scoring 14 points, a career-high. Johnson made 5 of 7 field goals and 4 of 4 free throws. Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) ended the day with 13 points, boosting her career total to 960. After setting a school record a year ago when she shot 87.9 percent from the line, Calderone was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. She added 7 assists and 4 steals.

Edinboro trailed by as many as nine points early in the game, the last time at 20-11 with 13:00 minutes remaining. The Fighting Scots went on a 12-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way. Calderone (five points), Reimer (four), and Sherred (three) combined for all 12 points.

The Fighting Scots eventually built the lead to nine at the half, 41-32. The margin never got closer than seven points the rest of the game.

Edinboro shot 48.4 percent from the floor and made 21 of 24 free throws (87.5 percent). The Fighting Scots were also guilty of just 11 turnovers while forcing 18.

The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday, facing UNC Pembroke in the second round of the Millersville Tournament.
