Kelly Calderone Reaches 1,000 Career Points, Kelsey Conklin Pulls Down 20 Rebounds
November 21, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – With Kelly Calderone (Freedom, PA/Ambridge) matching her career-high with 32 points and Kelsey Conklin (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) pulling down 20 rebounds, the Edinboro women’s basketball team debuted at home in fine fashion, upsetting 14th-ranked Charleston(WV), 81-71. The Fighting Scots are now 3-0, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-2.

The contest was a rematch of last year’s first round NCAA Division II East Regional Playoff game, when Charleston ended Edinboro’s season and proceeded to reach the Elite Eight for the second straight season. This time around Edinboro grabbed the lead for good with just under five minutes to play in the first half. Leading 33-29 at intermission, the Fighting Scots built the lead to 12 points on two occasions, then withstood a late rally by the Golden Eagles.

Edinboro led by ten points at 71-61 with 2:49 to play, but over the next two minutes Charleston cut the lead to three points at 73-70. Calderone made one of two free throws with 44 seconds left, then following a Charleston miss, Kim Mardis (Cleveland, OH/East Tech) made a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left to boost the margin to 76-70.

Calderone scored 12 points in the first half, then dropped in 20 points in the second half. She hit the 1,000-point mark in her career with a free throw at the 10:58 mark, the 22nd Edinboro player to reach 1,000 career points. Calderone is in her third season as a Fighting Scot after playing one season at the University at Buffalo. Oddly enough, she ran her streak to a school-record 46 consecutive free throws, but down the stretch missed four at the line. On the evening the senior guard made 9 of 17 field goals and was 14 of 18 from the line. She also registered her first career double-double with 10 rebounds.

Edinboro made 31 of 46 free throws, including 23 of 34 in the second half. The Fighting Scots also held a surprising 49-37 advantage on the glass, thanks to the efforts of Conklin. The 6’1” freshman posted her first career double-double, adding 10 points.

Another freshman Samantha Reimer (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also scored in double figures, finishing with 18 points. Rachel Johnson (Oreland, PA/Springfield) added 11 points.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, December 2, hosting Millersville. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
