EDINBORO, PA –- The Edinboro University men’s basketball team won its third straight game on Wednesday, handing visiting Penn State New Kensington a 70-26 defeat. The Fighting Scots are now 3-1, while the Lions fall to 0-5.

Penn State New Kensington actually scored the first basket of the game, a three-pointer by Cal Santucci-Elwood. Edinboro scored the next 16 points as the margin reached 20 points with just under ten minutes left in the first half and never got below 30 points after the five-minute mark of the half.

Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) scored Edinboro’s first seven points and had nine in the 16-0 run. The Boro’s leading scorer finished the night with 18 points, making 7 of 8 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws, and did not play in the second half.

Edinboro led 46-9 at the half, as the Lions made just 4 of 26 shots (15.4 percent) and committed 16 turnovers.

Penn State New Kensington suffered through a stretch of 13 minutes and 47 seconds without making a field goal, covering the final 6 minutes and 35 seconds of the first half and the first seven minutes and 12 seconds of the second half. All told, the Lions missed 23 straight shots during that period.

Chris Bess (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights), a walk-on who a month ago was playing football, was the only other player in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Vlad Kovalevsky (Richmond Hill, ONT/Vaughan Secondary) came off the bench to contribute 8 points and 7 rebounds. Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) paced a 68-37 advantage on the boards, pulling down 9 rebounds. Joseph Jones (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) made his first start and had a solid night. In 23 minutes, the sophomore guard scored 6 points, handed out a season-high 7 assists, and had 4 steals.

Neither team ended the night with impressive statistics. Edinboro shot 37.5 percent from the floor while Penn State New Kensington shot just 16.4 percent, making 10 of 61 field goal attempts. The Fighting Scots finished with 22 turnovers and forced 25 miscues by the Lions.

Edinboro continues a stretch of seven games in 15 days with a pair of PSAC crossover games this weekend. On Saturday, December 2, Millersville invades McComb Fieldhouse, followed by a Sunday, December 3 date with West Chester. Both games tipoff at 3:00 p.m.
