EDINBORO, PA - The Edinboro University
mens basketball team won its third straight game on
Wednesday, handing visiting Penn State New Kensington a 70-26
defeat. The Fighting Scots are now 3-1, while the Lions fall to
0-5.
Penn State New Kensington actually scored the
first basket of the game, a three-pointer by Cal Santucci-Elwood.
Edinboro scored the next 16 points as the margin reached 20 points
with just under ten minutes left in the first half and never got
below 30 points after the five-minute mark of the half.
Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour)
scored Edinboros first seven points and had nine in the 16-0
run. The Boros leading scorer finished the night with 18
points, making 7 of 8 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws, and did
not play in the second half.
Edinboro led 46-9 at the half, as the Lions
made just 4 of 26 shots (15.4 percent) and committed 16 turnovers.
Penn State New Kensington suffered through a
stretch of 13 minutes and 47 seconds without making a field goal,
covering the final 6 minutes and 35 seconds of the first half and
the first seven minutes and 12 seconds of the second half. All
told, the Lions missed 23 straight shots during that period.
Chris Bess (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker
Heights), a walk-on who a month ago was playing football, was
the only other player in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
Vlad Kovalevsky (Richmond Hill, ONT/Vaughan Secondary)
came off the bench to contribute 8 points and 7 rebounds. Curtis
Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) paced a 68-37
advantage on the boards, pulling down 9 rebounds. Joseph Jones
(Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) made his first start and had a solid
night. In 23 minutes, the sophomore guard scored 6 points, handed
out a season-high 7 assists, and had 4 steals.
Neither team ended the night with impressive
statistics. Edinboro shot 37.5 percent from the floor while Penn
State New Kensington shot just 16.4 percent, making 10 of 61 field
goal attempts. The Fighting Scots finished with 22 turnovers and
forced 25 miscues by the Lions.
Edinboro continues a stretch of seven games in
15 days with a pair of PSAC crossover games this weekend. On
Saturday, December 2, Millersville invades McComb Fieldhouse,
followed by a Sunday, December 3 date with West Chester. Both
games tipoff at 3:00 p.m. |
