Official Press Release

Free Throw Woes Lead to 82-78 Men's Loss to Millersville
Fighting Scots Go 11 for 23 at the Line in Loss
December 2, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University men’s basketball team has struggled all year from the free throw line, and on Saturday it may have finally caught up to them. The Fighting Scots saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with an 82-78 loss to visiting Millersville in a PSAC crossover contest. The loss drops Edinboro to 3-2, while Millersville has now won five games in a row to improve to 5-1.

Millersville came in averaging 92.2 ppg., while Edinboro was allowing just 49.5 ppg. That figure was skewed somewhat by a 70-26 win over an out-manned Penn State New Kensington team, but Edinboro had not allowed more than 61 points over the first four games.

Ultimately, it was Edinboro’s inability to make free throws that spelled defeat. While the Marauders were converting 18 of 22 free throws, the Fighting Scots were just 11 of 23 at the charity stripe.

The tight contest featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes. Millersville led for all but two moments late in the first half, with the two teams going to the break tied at 34-34. The Fighting Scots never led by more than two points, with the last advantage coming at 59-57 with 8:56 to play.

Millersville took the lead for good at 64-63 on a pair of free throws by Reggie Bates with 6:06 remaining. Charlie Parker, who came in averaging 22.2 ppg. but had been held in check by Curtis Ingram (Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney), came alive and scored the next nine points for Millersville as it built the lead to 73-67 with 3:14 remaining.

Edinboro had one last run. Ryan McLemore (Cleveland, OH/St. Peter Chanel), who played one of his best overall games at the Boro, made one of two free throws. Ingram followed with a three-pointer, and after another Parker bucket to make it eleven straight points, McLemore scored on a layup with 1:35 left to close the gap to 75-73.

Following a Millersville miss, the Fighting Scots had a chance to tie the game, but Daren Tielsch (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) would miss two free throws with 1:03 to play. Tielsch turned in an outstanding effort with 21 points and 13 rebounds, but he made just 3 of 10 free throws.

Trailing 76-75, Bates buried any last-second comeback hopes when he made a three-pointer from 35-feet out as the shot clock expired to bring the score to 79-75 with 12 seconds left. Edinboro then turned the ball over.

Four Boro players scored in double figures. Ingram ended the day with 15 points, making 3 of 4 three-pointers. McLemore had 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. He moved into ninth place in career blocked shots with 113. Joseph Jones (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) finished with 11 points. Tielsch’s 21 points gives him 979 for his career at Edinboro, 21 shy of 1,000.

Parker paced a contingent of five Marauders in double digits with 20 points. Greg Testa hit his average with 19 points, while Bates contributed 13 and RayQuan Milkes 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Edinboro returns to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting West Chester in another PSAC crossover affair. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
