EDINBORO, PA After opening the season
with three straight wins, the Edinboro University womens
basketball team suffered its second straight loss on Sunday,
dropping a 75-70 defeat to visiting West Chester. The Fighting
Scots are now 3-2, while West Chester won its second straight game
to improve to 2-3.
The contest featured a pair of big swings.
After a slow start which saw neither team score for almost three
minutes, West Chester pulled ahead by eleven points at 27-16 with
4:21 to play. The Fighting Scots rallied, however, outscoring the
Golden Rams, 14-4, the rest of the way to trail by just one at
31-30 at the half. Rae Sherred fueled the burst with eight of her
team-high 14 points.
The Fighting Scots came out and forced eight
turnovers in the first four minutes, leading to a 16-2 run that
gave them a 48-36 lead with 14:30 to play. Freshman Kelsey Conklin
scored six points during that period.
Unfortunately, that lead quickly evaporated, as
there was a 22-point swing in just 12 minutes, with West Chester
going on top 68-58 with 2:34 to play. During that 12-minute
stretch Edinboro made just 4 of 17 shots.
That pretty much mirrored Edinboros
shooting throughout the day. The Fighting Scots shot 27.5 percent
from the floor (19 of 69), negating a 28-for-37 chart at the free
throw line. West Chester shot 48.1 percent (25 of 52) for the
game, including 59.1 percent in the second half.
Sherred was one of four Fighting Scots in
double figures, and the junior guard added 8 rebounds. Kelly
Calderone scored 13 points, with Conklin contributing 12 points
and 9 rebounds, and Samantha Reimer adding 10 markers.
Edinboro returns to action on Friday, December
8, playing in the Avalon Classic at Gannon. The Fighting Scots
will face West Liberty State at 8 p.m.
