The Full Story |
EDINBORO, PA The Edinboro University mens
basketball team squandered a 22-point halftime lead against
Mercyhurst on Wednesday, then held the Lakers without a point for
almost three minutes to secure a 63-57 win over the Lakers.
The victory boosted Edinboros record to
5-2, while Mercyhurst falls to 4-3. The victory marked the second
time in three years that the Fighting Scots swept local rivals
Mercyhurst and Gannon. The contest concluded a six-game homestand
for Edinboro. Now the Fighting Scots complete a stretch of seven
games in 15 days with a Saturday, December 9 game at
Charleston(WV).
Edinboro turned in an impressive performance in
the first half, jumping out to a 38-16 lead at intermission. The
Fighting Scots held Mercyhurst to just 20.0 percent shooting, as
the Lakers made just 7 of 35 shots. They also played a near
flawless floor game, committing just three turnovers, and held a
26-19 advantage on the glass.
The second half was a different story, as the
Fighting Scots committed 13 turnover, many of those in the first
ten minutes as Mercyhurst clawed its way back into the game. The
Lakers also took control of the boards, holding a 25-13 advantage
over the final twenty minutes.
The biggest factor was Edinboros foul
problems. The Fighting Scots were forced to play without leading
scorer and rebounder Daren Tielsch, who fouled out with just under
eleven minutes to play. Minutes earlier the 68 senior
had become the 24th Edinboro player to score 1,000 career points.
But he picked up three fouls in the span of two minutes. Tielsch
ended the night with 6 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. It ended
a streak of 13 straight games in double digits. He now has 1,001
points in three seasons as a Fighting Scot, and 1,116 points for
his career.
Mercyhurst finally completed its comeback with
a basket with 3:11 remaining to tie the game at 54-54. The Lakers
had a chance to take their first lead since it was 2-0, but Avi
Fogel missed the front end of a one-and-one. Joseph Jones missed a
pair of free throws, but Fogel, Mercyhursts leading scorer
at 22.2 ppg., missed a jumper, and this time the Scots grabbed the
lead for good.
Jones gave Edinboro the lead with a jumper in
the lane, and completed the three-point play with a free throw for
a 57-54 lead with 1:57 remaining. Ryan McLemore, who was an
intimidator inside all night, made one of two free throws, as did
Kyree Brown. Brown, a transfer from Eastern Illinois who scored a
season high 14 points, accounted for Edinboros final five
points on free throws in the final minute. He was a perfect
4-for-4 from the floor and made 5 of 8 free throws.
Brown was one of three Fighting Scots in double
figures. Curtis Ingram scored 13 points and Jones had 12 points.
McLemore contributed 8 points, 8 rebounds and a career-high 9
blocked shots.
Edinboro ended the game shooting 46.0 percent
from the floor while holding Mercyhurst to 32.4 percent.
