Bradshaw, Mclaughlin Place at Nittany Lion Open
December 6, 2006

EDINBORO, PA – A pair of Edinboro University wrestlers placed in the Nittany Lion Open on Sunday. Pat Bradshaw placed third at 197 lbs., with his lone loss coming to the top-ranked wrestler in the country. Rick McLaughlin finished fourth at 141 lbs.

Bradshaw, a redshirt freshman, went 5-1, with his lone loss a 9-1 major decision to Phil Davis of Penn State, the top-ranked wrestler at 197 lbs. and last year’s national runner-up, in the semifinals. He posted a 5-2 decision over Karim Mahmoud of Rutgers, followed by a 7-3 decision against Garrett Hunter of Army. That was followed by a 3-1 win over Conner Sanders of Army, and he reached the semifinals with an 8-6 decision against Brent Jones of Virginia. Jones had won his first three matches by fall. Following his loss to Davis in the semifinals, Bradshaw defeated another Nittany Lion, Chad Unger, in the third place match.

McLaughlin reached the semifinals, as well, but came up a 6-5 loser in a tiebreaker to Alex Krom of Maryland. McLaughlin would finish the day with a 4-2 record, losing to Michigan State’s Jeff Wimberley in the third place match. He opened with an 8-3 win against Fred Rodgers of Rider, then moved on with a 10-3 decision over Austin Milster of Army. Next came a 7-4 win over Duke’s Wes Kuser, and in the quarterfinals he decisioned Reece Humphrey of Ohio State, 6-3.

Several other Fighting Scots competed in the Nittany Lion Open. Greg Sill competed at 125 lbs., going 0-1. At 133 lbs., State College native Kyle Fluke returned home and went 3-2, including a technical fall. Another freshman, Ricky Saxton, lost his lone match while competing at 149 lbs. He dropped a 3-1 decision to Penn State’s Dan Vallimont, who went on to finish second.
