EDINBORO, PA All five starters scored in
double figures as the Edinboro University mens basketball
team picked up a big road win with a 77-75 triumph at
Charleston(WV). The Fighting Scots have now won three straight
games and six of their last seven to improve to 6-2. Charleston, a
team which won 18 games a year ago, is 1-3.
Edinboro trailed by as a nine-point lead on
several occasions in the second half, the last at 61-52 with 9:11
remaining. The Fighting Scots rallied to tie the contest at 66-66
with 5:18 to play thanks to a 14-5 burst. Charleston regained the
lead on a three-pointer, but a Daren Tielsch free throw and Devon
Knights jumper tied the game again at 69-69 with 3:5 left.
Knight gave Edinboro the lead for good with
another bucket, and Joseph Jones followed with a short jumper for
a 73-69 left with 2:38 to play. The lead remained four points at
77-73 with 1:11 to play on Ryan McLemores layup, but the
Boro had to survive the 71 seconds. Marquis Brooks, who led the
Golden Eagles with 23 points, made a pair of free throws to close
the gap to 77-75.
Edinboro turned the ball over on its next two
possessions, but Charleston could not take advantage. The Golden
Eagles also committed two turnovers, the last with five seconds
remaining on a steal by Jones.
Edinboro shot a season-high 50.9 percent from
the floor thanks to a hot second half. The Fighting Scots made 16
of 25 shots (64.0 percent) over the final twenty minutes.
Charleston was almost as hot, shooting 58.6 percent in the second
half (17 of 29), but the Golden Eagles still shot just 41.3
percent for the game. Incredibly, thats just the second time
an opponent has shot over 40 percent from the floor.
Another big factor was Edinboros
performance at the line. The Fighting Scots came into the game
shooting less than 60 percent for the season from the free throw
line, but proceeded to shoot a season-high 72.0 percent, making 18
of 25 free throws.
Knight led the Fighting Scots with a
career-high 17 points, adding 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
The junior guard had not scored in double figures in the previous
five games. Jones added 14 points, while Curtis Ingram had 11
markers.
Tielsch and McLemore each posted double-doubles
to lead Edinboro to a 40-34 advantage on the boards. Tielsch had
11 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in seven
games. McLemore added 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second
double-double. He also had 4 blocked shots, giving him 35 for the
season and 128 for his career.
The Fighting Scots will now break for final
exams before returning to action with back-to-back PSAC crossover
doubleheaders on December 19 and 20 against East Stroudsburg and
Kutztown, respectively. |
