Edinboro Improves to 6-2 With 77-75 Men's Basketball Win at Charleston
December 9, 2006

Complete Box Score

EDINBORO, PA – All five starters scored in double figures as the Edinboro University men’s basketball team picked up a big road win with a 77-75 triumph at Charleston(WV). The Fighting Scots have now won three straight games and six of their last seven to improve to 6-2. Charleston, a team which won 18 games a year ago, is 1-3.

Edinboro trailed by as a nine-point lead on several occasions in the second half, the last at 61-52 with 9:11 remaining. The Fighting Scots rallied to tie the contest at 66-66 with 5:18 to play thanks to a 14-5 burst. Charleston regained the lead on a three-pointer, but a Daren Tielsch free throw and Devon Knight’s jumper tied the game again at 69-69 with 3:5 left.

Knight gave Edinboro the lead for good with another bucket, and Joseph Jones followed with a short jumper for a 73-69 left with 2:38 to play. The lead remained four points at 77-73 with 1:11 to play on Ryan McLemore’s layup, but the Boro had to survive the 71 seconds. Marquis Brooks, who led the Golden Eagles with 23 points, made a pair of free throws to close the gap to 77-75.

Edinboro turned the ball over on its next two possessions, but Charleston could not take advantage. The Golden Eagles also committed two turnovers, the last with five seconds remaining on a steal by Jones.

Edinboro shot a season-high 50.9 percent from the floor thanks to a hot second half. The Fighting Scots made 16 of 25 shots (64.0 percent) over the final twenty minutes. Charleston was almost as hot, shooting 58.6 percent in the second half (17 of 29), but the Golden Eagles still shot just 41.3 percent for the game. Incredibly, that’s just the second time an opponent has shot over 40 percent from the floor.

Another big factor was Edinboro’s performance at the line. The Fighting Scots came into the game shooting less than 60 percent for the season from the free throw line, but proceeded to shoot a season-high 72.0 percent, making 18 of 25 free throws.

Knight led the Fighting Scots with a career-high 17 points, adding 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. The junior guard had not scored in double figures in the previous five games. Jones added 14 points, while Curtis Ingram had 11 markers.

Tielsch and McLemore each posted double-doubles to lead Edinboro to a 40-34 advantage on the boards. Tielsch had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in seven games. McLemore added 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double. He also had 4 blocked shots, giving him 35 for the season and 128 for his career.

The Fighting Scots will now break for final exams before returning to action with back-to-back PSAC crossover doubleheaders on December 19 and 20 against East Stroudsburg and Kutztown, respectively.
